In 2024, Cancun’s sargassum seaweed season was better, until last week the entire Mexican Caribbean saw an influx of seaweed onto beaches.

Fortunately, not all beaches are equally affected by the presence of Sargassum. We have put together an extensive selection of beaches in the Cancun area with little Sargassum.

Caracol Beach – Hotel Zone

Caracol Beach is located in the northern part of Cancun’s hotel zone. Because it does not have the same currents as the main beaches, the water is calmer and contains less seaweed.

It is located in Punta Cancun, a prime location with restaurants, bars and some of Cancun’s best resorts such as Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, Hotel Riu Cancun and Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas. Playa Caracol is a public beach, so it’s easy to get to even if you’re not staying at one of the resorts.

It is also known as one of the best beaches for families because the waves are not strong and there are no dangerous currents.

Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy

At just 8 kilometers long, the island’s pristine white sands, untouched by sargassum, are the unmistakable focal point, drawing visitors in with its sheer beauty.

Isla Mujeres Playa Centro

Known for its pristine white sands and beautiful waters, Playa Centro is one of Quintana Roo’s most sought-after beaches. It’s no wonder that visiting Isla Mujeres is a must-do for many tourists during their stay in Cancun.

Untouched by sargassum, this beach offers a range of recreational activities for you to enjoy, ranging from paddle boarding and snorkeling to witnessing the majestic presence of whales and dolphins.

You can go to Isla Mujeres by ferry from Puerto Juarez, located just 15 minutes from Cancun. It only lasts about 15 minutes and runs every 30 minutes.

Isla Mujeres-Punta Sur

Although Punta Sur is not a traditional beach, it is a perfect getaway to avoid sargassum. Admire the extraordinary sculptures and fascinating coastline.

This rocky coast showcases the remarkable works of art by more than 20 skilled Mexican painters, along with fascinating traces of Mexican archaeology. Take beautiful photos of the sargassum-free Caribbean Sea, making it an ideal destination for photography enthusiasts.

Chiquila Beach

A quiet beach in Chiquila, away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun, offers a peaceful retreat and a perfect escape from seaweed.

Enjoy delicious seafood while lounging on the sand. Chiquila Port offers daily excursions to Holbox Island for adventurous travelers.

Holbox Island is located 60.9 kilometers from Cancun and can be easily reached by car or shuttle bus, but after that you will have to take a ferry. There are no cars on the island, so if you come with a rental car you will have to leave it at the port. The ferry ride takes approximately 25 minutes.

Playa Tortugas

Playa Tortugas is a captivating destination known for its beautiful beaches and serene atmosphere. Located in the north of Cancun, it gets less seaweed compared to other beaches in Cancun.

It is easily accessible by taxi, allowing visitors to explore Cancun’s lively entertainment areas at leisure.

Playa Ballenas

Playa Ballenas in Cancun is a must for beach lovers looking for a slice of paradise without sargassum. With its pristine sandy beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters, this idyllic beach offers a tranquil and picturesque retreat. Relax under the swaying palm trees, enjoy the warm rays of the sun and let yourself be carried away by the refreshing ocean waves. Whether you want to relax, enjoy water activities such as snorkeling, or simply admire the breathtaking coastal scenery, Playa Ballenas has it all.

Plus, the beach is close to hotels, restaurants and amenities, so you’re guaranteed a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Escape to Playa Ballenas and enjoy the beauty and tranquility that Cancun has to offer.
