Spending a summer is a dream of many, and millions of travelers around the world come there every year to visit iconic destinations such as Barcelona, Rome or Santorini. Unfortunately, those beautiful places become busier than normal, and all the lines can get quite tiring.
So what to do if you still want to experience fairytale Europe but avoid the busy crowds? To get the most out of your trip, we have a number of tips for you. Here are the 8 incredible hidden gems in Europe to visit in 2024.
Santuario Madonna Della Corona, Spiazzi, Italy
Carved into the Monte Baldo Mountains in Northern Italy, Santuario Madonna Della Corona is a hidden gem that will take your breath away. The shrine has long been a popular destination for spiritual pilgrimages, but you’ll enjoy it even if you’re not religious.
It offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and villages, and a peaceful atmosphere – perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In the area you will also find many beautiful walks and nature trails.
Its location makes it a great day trip from Verona or Lago di Garda. It is best reached by car, but there are also some public transport options.
Tavolara Island, Sardinia
If you are planning a trip to Sardinia, don’t forget to include Tavolara Island in your itinerary. As part of the Marine Protected Area, it has pristine beaches and excellent conditions for snorkeling, diving and boat trips.
The island is also known for its great walks. The most popular route starts at Spalmatore di Terra beach and takes you to the Pratone viewpoint. Please note, however, that Tavolara’s terrain is quite challenging and all walks require a guide and equipment as most involve a bit of abseiling and ferrata.
Do you like cinema? Aim to arrive in mid-July, when the island comes alive with the annual Tavolara Film Festival. On the other hand, we recommend that you come for walks in spring or autumn to avoid the heat.
Island of Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel, Azores
Bubbling volcanoes, lush nature and quiet lagoons with turquoise water. A holiday in the Azores already sounds fantastic. But there is one place that stands out among others: the island of Vila Franca do Campo.
It is located near the south coast of São Miguel Island. It is shaped like a rocky ring with a lagoon in the middle, making it a great place for swimming, snorkeling and diving. The best part? Not many people know about it yet, which will make your visit an enchanting and serene beach experience.
The hot springs of Saturnia, Italy
If you are in Tuscany this summer, don’t miss the Saturnia hot springs. Set in the idyllic Tuscan countryside, just a short drive from the spa town of Saturnia, this natural spa is ideal for a rejuvenating retreat.
Don’t worry, a visit to the Saturnia Hot Springs is not expensive. On the contrary: you can enjoy the thermal water and its healing properties completely free of charge. However, if you want to take your experience a step further, treat yourself to an overnight stay at one of the exclusive resorts. The area is also known for its excellent dining options.
Elafonissi beach, Crete, Greece
You don’t have to go all the way to the Bahamas to visit a pink sand beach. You will also find one in Crete, and it is called Elafonissi Beach. What gives this coast its iconic color is the washed-up remains of pink shells mixed with soft sand. The waters there are incredibly clean and warm, perfect for wading, swimming and even observing colorful fish and sea turtles.
Get noticed this lesser known piece of paradise. For the best experience, we recommend that you come early in the morning so you can have it to yourself.
On the way back you can go to the nearby Kedrodasos Beach, about a 10-minute drive away. Be careful, it is quite rocky and the stones can be slippery so you may need a good pair of sandals instead of flip flops.
Bastei Bridge, Germany
Not much of a beach lover? We also have something for outdoor enthusiasts. The Bastei Bridge is a fascinating natural wonder Saxon Switzerland National Park in Germany (yes, the name is indeed misleading). It overlooks the Elbe River and offers beautiful views of various rock formations and deep forestsAnd has some historical significance.
It was built on the site of a wooden bridge that was part of Neurathen Castle, and you can explore its remains there too. Many hiking trails lead to the bridge. They are suitable for all levels and have different lengths. Simply choose the one that best suits your schedule. At the park there is also a souvenir shop, toilets and a restaurant to refuel.
Studlagil Basalt Canyon, Iceland
Iceland is known for its unparalleled natural beauty. And Studlagil basalt gorge could easily be the most enchanting attraction around.
The gorge is about 500 meters long and surrounded by basalt columns up to 30 meters high. Due to their volcanic origin, they have a dark color, which contrasts well with the bright blue river. It all makes for a dramatic landscape worth a photo shoot or two.
Several hiking trails surround the area and each offers a different view of the canyon. Its remote location guarantees unspoilt natural beauty and solitude, and there’s a good chance you’ll spot local wildlife such as native birds and reindeer.
Meteora, Greece
The word Meterora means “hanging in the air” and that is exactly what this place is about – it is a complex of historic monasteries on top of high rock formations and will give you an unforgettable experience.
It was founded by monks seeking solitude and spiritual refuge. Today it serves as a place to meditate, walk and enjoy the panoramic views. You can also learn about the history of Meteora by exploring its monasteries, or through guided tours and museum exhibits.
