Every year, the Met Gala red carpet produces some of the most memorable celebrity fashion moments of all time. ‘s New York City affair – themed ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’ – was certainly no different, with a bevy of A-listers hitting the red carpet in custom creations. The best-dressed attendees of the evening were those who paid tribute to this year’s theme (and the ‘garden of time’ dress code) – in both thoughtful and unexpected ways.
Naturally, all of the official co-hosts of the 2024 Met Gala were on the best-dressed list. Zendaya turned heads in not one but two standout looks, including her custom Margiela look and a vintage Givenchy dress from the house’s Spring 1996 collection. Jennifer Lopez opted for a sparkling Schiaparelli number; while Bad Bunny wore a sculptural Margiela suit and Chris Hemsworth a sleek Tom Ford suit.
Unsurprisingly, flowers proved to be the breakout look of the evening. Celebrities are transformed into high fashion bouquets in different ways. There was Nicki Minaj in a Marni dress covered in hand-painted metallic flowers, and Gigi Hadid in a three-dimensional floral ballgown by Thom Browne. Adwoah Aboah, meanwhile, had the best pregnancy moment of the evening: in a red floral H&M look with a crop top and a full skirt.
Some of the evening’s more unexpected (and much more avant-garde) moments also shone, proving that the evening’s best-dressed celebrities did not. to have be in flowers. Lana Del Rey, for example, brought out the drama in a veiled Alexander McQueen look with an antler headpiece; it was a thoughtful tribute to the late designer’s iconic Fall 2006 collection. Tyla also transformed herself into a sand sculpture – via an extremely fitted Balmain dress that fit like a second skin.
As for some of the best dressed men of the night? Well-dressed gentlemen such as Josh O’Connor (in Loewe), Morgan Spector (in Willy Chaverria) and Stefon Diggs (in H&M) shone in tailoring that was contemporary and neat.
