The title may be a nod to Richard Williams (Will Smith), the father and tireless coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena (Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton), but crucial to the success of Reinaldo Marcus Green’s great sports epic is Aunjanue Ellis. their fiercely protective, no-nonsense mother, Oracene. She works double shifts as a nurse, isn’t afraid to call her husband out when he’s falling short, and cares for her daughters with the same dedication she did during their education. Ultimately, they owe her as much as they owe him.
