With so many beautiful destinations to choose from, the Caribbean is known for its relaxing atmosphere, tropical beaches and abundant marine life. When planning a vacation in the Caribbean, safety is likely one of your biggest concerns, so here are some of the safest destinations in the Caribbean.
All these islands are classified as Level 1 – Take normal Department of State precautions. This is the lowest level of advice and travelers should still be aware of the normal risks of international travel.
Dominica
Located south of Guadeloupe and north of Martinique in the eastern Caribbean, Dominica is the youngest Caribbean island and the last to be colonized, finally gaining independence on November 3, 1978. Air travelers can connect directly to Dominica from Miami with American Airlines and make regional connections from surrounding Caribbean hubs.
Dominica is an island without mega resorts, but packed with some of the healthiest coral reefs, dormant volcanoes and verdant wildlife. It offers a range of walks, waterfalls and jungle adventures.
Grenada
As the spice island of the Caribbean, Grenada will celebrate its 50th year of independence in 2024. The green island is home to tons of mona monkeys and relies on agriculture and export crops such as nutmeg, but is gaining popularity among international travelers.
The small island is known for its lush forests and waterfalls and the world’s first underwater garden, the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park.
Anguilla
Anguilla is known to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world; the island is surrounded by 33 beaches. Located just off the beaten path, it is still accessible via three major ports of entry: Miami, FL (MIA), Puerto Rico (SJU), and St. Martin (SXM), as well as via private air transportation.
With a great culinary scene, major festivals and luxurious accommodations, this Level 1 island is home to numerous attractions to lure tourists.
Bermuda
The British Isles in the North Atlantic Ocean consists of a series of islands in the Sargasso Sea. Famous for its picturesque beaches, such as the pink sand beaches, beautiful reefs and a complex cave network, it is also a global financial centre.
The luxury island is just a few hours’ flight from New York City and is only 21 miles long, but there’s plenty to do, from St. George’s to Hamilton and the Royal Naval Dockyard.
Barbados
Rich in cultural, heritage, sporting, culinary and environmental experiences, Barbados has something for every kind of traveler. As the culinary capital of the Caribbean, the island is home to more than 400 restaurants and eateries and is also known as the birthplace of rum.
Barbados is considered one of the safest countries in the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic Ocean and those traveling to this paradise in the summer will likely find lower prices and less crowded beaches as it is the off-season in Barbados.
Antigua and Barbuda
Positioned where the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean meet, the sovereign island country presents a two-island Caribbean paradise. From the beautiful coastline and pink and white sand beaches, and crystal clear waters to the protective reefs, it is also the largest breeding colony of frigate birds in the Caribbean.
The island has no mountains or forests and its British history is still evident through its architecture and the 18th century Nelson’s Dockyard. Besides the beaches, the culinary delicacies are another reason why visitors come to visit.
