Known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs, Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. It is known for its biodiversity of flora and fauna and the interesting fact that it was the only known home of the now distinctive dodo bird.

In addition to its fantastic beauty, the island is also home to an enchanting underwater ‘waterfall’ that is a truly spectacular sight. Made possible by an undersea plateau known as the Mascarene Plateau, Mauritius is one of the few places where such an astonishing geological spectacle can be seen.

This unusual underwater ‘waterfall’ was only created eight million years ago and although this may seem quite a long time ago, the Mascarene Plateau is one of the newest major features on our planet.

Because the small island is located on an ocean plateau above the ocean floor, there is a sudden drop of 4.5 kilometers to the ocean floor, creating this ‘waterfall’. Although it appears to be a waterfall at first glance, it is actually an optical illusion formed by sand and silt deposits.

This illusion can only be seen in the sky on the southwestern coast of the island known as the Le Morne Peninsula. In the picturesque turquoise lagoon and surrounding crystal clear waters, the unique blend of the shades of the deposits creates the illusion of an enchanting waterfall.

The island is almost completely surrounded by coral reefs and is of volcanic origin and has a maritime subtropical climate, luxurious accommodations and unparalleled nature. It is home to luxury properties such as Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius and One&Only Le Saint Géran, along with other luxury boutique hotels.
