There is no better place to spend the summer than the Caribbean.
Unfortunately, it seems like too many of us agree on that; and our favorite hotspots have become so chaotic and overcrowded that it’s impossible not to turn our eyes elsewhere for a calmer, more authentic Caribbean experience.
That’s exactly why more and more travelers are now choosing once-overlooked destinations. Grenada and the American virgin islands.
So if you too are fed up with the insatiable tourist crowds that have overtaken one of the most beautiful regions in the world, here’s why these two places should be at the top of your must-see list this summer:
Pristine beaches
Let’s start with the one thing we’re probably all for: the beaches.
You don’t need me to tell you that the Caribbean has some of the most breathtaking coastlines in the world, but the places you’ll find on these islands are truly next level.
Starting with Grenada, Anse Beach, La Sagesse and Morne Rouge (easily my favorite hidden corner in the entire country), are some of the most pristine looking places you will ever come across, and even in more classically touristy places like Anse, you can smell still the relaxed island feeling.
The U.S. Virgin Islands (comprised of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix) aren’t far behind in terms of scenery either.
You’ve probably heard of the famously beautiful Trunk Bay and Magens Bay, and while they’re both well worth a visit, don’t forget to add less commercial places like Cinnamon Bay, Secret Harbor Beach and Buck Island to your list as well. the beaches you must see.
Enjoy that authentic Caribbean charm, without an audience
Another reason why I would recommend prioritizing these lesser-known places during your visit to Grenada or the US Virgin Islands is that here you get exactly what you were hoping for: unspoiled nature and the ultimate tranquil Caribbean experience.
Even when you’re not at the beach, you can spend your days exploring Grenada’s picturesque capital (St. Georges), the famous National Museum, housed in a former French barracks, and the iconic Belmont estate.
Are you traveling to the US Virgin Islands instead?
Fill your itinerary with shopping in St. Thomas, excursions to Blackbeard’s Castle, visits to the Annaberg Sugar Plantation, and historically immersive walks at St. Croix’s Estate Whim Plantation Museum.
Whatever you choose, you are guaranteed a good time
The great thing about all these islands is that although they are peaceful and quiet, they are never boring.
Take Grenada for example.
Between all the diving sessions, underwater sculpture expeditions, excellent hiking and fun nights out at the local beach bars, you’re guaranteed a summer holiday to remember for a lifetime.
Likewise, those vacationing in St. Croix, St. John, or St. Thomas (why not all three?) this season can look forward to a trip filled with fun nights out, mountaintop restaurants, sunset boat rides, and endless shopping – I don’t know about you, but that sounds like the perfect summer to me.
You are also guaranteed good food
It doesn’t matter if you’re a foodie or not, how well you eat is an important part of how much you get to enjoy a vacation, and luckily you don’t have to worry about sub-par food in the US. one of these destinations.
Tell me: Can the food at a place nicknamed “the Spice Island” be anything but mind-boggling?
Not only does Grenada produce an insane array of spices, but the locals have also learned to use them in the most unique and flavorful ways imaginable.
Just try their famous Oil Down, a hearty one-pot meal made with a fresh protein of your choice, breadfruit, callaloo and vegetables, all simmered in coconut milk and spices, preferably over an open flame, and contact me – and don’t. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a bottle of rum straight from the River Antoine Distillery.
The people of the US Virgin Islands have a similarly vibrant culinary background.
Here you can enjoy some of the most iconic dishes in the entire Caribbean, including Kallaloo, Fungi, Johnnycake and Red Grout, to name a few.
