Even with the threat of a more than active tropical weather season in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun is hotter than ever among vacation travelers.
Tourist bookings for what is considered by many to be the slow season are picking up strongly this year. This raises the question of whether the popular tourist destinations Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum really have a slow season.
Strong summer season
It may only be early July, but the resorts and hotels in Cancun are more than 60% vol at this time and according to local officials, reservations remain high.
“We must remember that many of the reservations, at least 50%, are made with less notice, which means that they are often at the last minute,” says Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres. “That’s why we think we have a good pace before the start of the period.”
In fact, he said several popular resorts and hotels in the Mexican Caribbean are already full for the season.
According to the Mexican Ministry of Tourism, an estimated total of one million travelers are expected in the Mexican Caribbean during the summer season.
Cancun remains popular
The Mexican Ministry of Tourism recently reported that Cancun remains one of the top tourist destinations in the entire country highest hotel occupancy rate.
Of the twelve travel destinations surveyed by the ministry, Los Cabos and Cancun both topped the list in the first quarter of 2024.
Travel budgets are going up
Due to strong demand for the summer season, the average price per night has also increased in the Mexican Caribbean, forcing travelers to increase their budget when going on vacation.
According to reports, travelers to the state of Quintana Roo, which includes Cancun, budget around $1,000 per person. About 26% of that budget is also used to travel to nearby cities.
Looking at the resorts and hotels in Cancun for the end of this month, five-star hotels cost $331 per night, four-star hotels average $123 and three-star hotels about $55 per night. Google Hotels rates these average room night rates as ‘typical’.
What travelers need to know
If you’re planning a vacation getaway to the sun, sand, and surf of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, now is the time to book your summer vacation.
With some preferred resorts and hotels already full, the availability of the best rooms at the best prices is quickly becoming limited.
Tourists looking for the best summer deals will want to reserve their hotel rooms as soon as possible. The overall occupancy rate is well above 60 percent this season, meaning room rates will rise as demand increases.
Travelers are advised to be sure to secure cancelable reservations in the event of a tropical vacation impact and to purchase travel insurance when visiting the Mexican Caribbean during the summer travel season.
The same advice is also recommended for booking flights, as airfares will also increase along with increased summer demand for vacation destinations to Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean.
