4. Point Lobos Nature Reserve

62 California 1, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA 93923, card

Point Lobos is often called the “crown jewel” of California’s state park system. It’s just as beautiful as Big Sur, but I was pleasantly surprised that it’s not as busy. This stretch of coast is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and tide pooling is a great activity for kids and adults alike.

We tide pooled at Weston Beach, where you often see crabs, anemones, sea urchins, starfish and more. Be sure to check the tide charts and go at low tide. There are also numerous hiking trails and viewpoints. Next time we want to try diving!

Local tip: We went at 9am for the lowest tide of the day (-0.3 ft), and most of the lots were small and full, except Weston Beach. When we left at 11am, there were still people out and about.

Wear sturdy shoes when you are Titpooling. The rock is very slippery and we saw a few people slip. We almost had a close call.
