It’s the question many travelers ask themselves before heading out on an international vacation: What’s the food like where I’m going?

No. 1 – Sardine sandwichNo. 2 – Potato stockNo. 3 – Mango gazpachoNo. 4 – Rosquillas de Santa ClaraNo. 5 – PorrusaldaTips for travelers

To get the answer, they usually turn to friends, family and fellow travelers to find out what the food is like at the destination they are traveling to.

However, experimenting in the country is also one of the fun things about traveling, especially inland Spain. That’s how my wife and I recently came across pumpkin jam pie Pastel colored cordobés in the old Spanish city of Córdoba.

On the other hand, it never fails that you try a local recommendation when you travel the world and discover that the dish is really not what you like or were looking for.

With that, let’s take a look at the top five dishes that tourists really hate when visiting Spain, according to Taste Atlas. Hopefully it will save you some heartburn too.

No. 1 – Sardine sandwich

It is not surprising to me that the most beloved plate for tourists in Spain is a Sardine sandwich.

According to a local Spanish newspaper, it is a dish that has saved a lot of time for many Spaniards looking for a quick meal – bread, sardines and peppers or whatever can be found to add some extra flavor elements.

To be honest, it doesn’t seem that great to me either.

No. 2 – Potato stock

Potato broth from the Canary Islands came in as the second least liked dish among tourists in Spain.

It is simply made with onions, tomatoes, peppers, saffron, eggs and yes, potatoes. Doesn’t sound that bad, but it received a score of 2.6 out of 5 on Taste Atlas.

No. 3 – Mango gazpacho

The idea of cold soup puts most people off. However, I must admit that during my trip to Córdoba I licked the bowl of good plain Gazpacho, but there were no mangoes in it.

The local newspaper reporters who conducted this investigation in Spain also scratched their heads when Smaakatlas attributed the recipe to Andalusia. I know I didn’t see it on the menu when I traveled there either.

No. 4 – Rosquillas de Santa Clara

Should a sweet dessert actually make the list of the most hated foods in Spain among tourists? Rosquillas de Santa Clara are essentially sugar-glazed donuts associated with Madrid and its patron saint, San Isidor.

Come on, who doesn’t like donuts? These are made with star anise, so maybe it’s the licorice-like flavor that travelers don’t like?

No. 5 – Porrusalda

The last of the five most loved dishes by travelers to Spain is Porrusalda. This is another soup, this time with potatoes and leek. This is a fairly common soup around the world.

It is a naturally creamy soup that does not involve cream in its preparation. It’s a pretty standard, all-natural soup that for some reason many visitors to Spain dislike.

Tips for travelers

While traveling the world, tourists can try a number of different dishes representative of the local diet, traditions and culture. Some may be a hit, others may disappoint.

Here are five dishes that fellow travelers to the Iberian Peninsula voted down for their personal palates.

But don’t take their word for it. Part of the fun of traveling is experiencing different countries and cultures for yourself. So go ahead and give them a try when you’re in Spain and decide if you agree. Maybe you just disagree and enjoy a dish that adds to your travel memories.
