How many hidden gems are left in the world? Even AI doesn’t know.
As travel has reached new heights, more and more hidden gems are being discovered, from here in the US to as far away as Asia.
Right in between lies Europe, where cobbled streets, amazing nature and historic architecture that oozes charm and character are calling your name.
That is one such European country Polandbest known for Warsaw, the impressive capital that was completely rebuilt after the Second World War.
Besides this underrated city, the average Joe or Jane may not be able to name another Polish destination.
Especially with a tongue-twisting name like Bydgoszcz, a cheap outing with canals that are just as beautiful as Amsterdam, if not more beautiful.
Those looking for the ultimate in Europe on a budget, look no further!
Another Amsterdam alternative
You probably understand by now: there are many places in Europe with picturesque canals.
Of course Amsterdam trumps them all, at least that’s what you want to believe.
Unless you’ve been too busy lately binge-watching one of the seemingly hundreds of apps on your smart TV, then you probably know how Amsterdam has transformed and asked tourists not to come in some cases.
That alone could deter many travelers looking to check the iconic city off their travel wish list.
Although Bruges, Utrecht and others have been mentioned as alternatives, Bydgoszcz flies well under the radar and would like to have you!
However, this Polish city is not the only one, because Gdansk is also an excellent alternative.
So why Bydgoszcz over Gdansk?
One of the cheapest cities in Europe
Let’s look at the big picture: You don’t board a long-haul flight just to spend a day in Europe.
If you do, be prepared for hassles at customs, to say the least, as this is the ultimate red flag.
That said, Europeans know their continent well, so labeling a city as the cheapest should not be taken lightly.
That is the case for Bydgoszcz, which is hyped as the cheapest day trip in Europe. Sorry, Gdańsk!
And as beautiful as this unknown city is, you will definitely want to stay longer.
Bydgoszcz can be easily reached by bus from both Gdansk and Warsaw in under three hours, with Gdansk being the closest gateway.
Otherwise, travelers can connect from major hubs such as London (STN and LTN) with flights starting from $29 on Ryanair!
When you arrive, you can expect more of the same savings with highly affordable hotels like the top-rated four-star hotel Hotel Słoneczny Młyn as low as $65 in August.
Although it is a relatively small city, the best way to get around is by public tram. With rides costing only approx $0.70 per rideIt’s definitely worth it!
Better yet, take the scenic route by taking a water tram across the beautiful River Brda for just 50 cents more.
And the more you save, the more risk you run buy a vowel for this city, as that seems to be a recurring problem.
Tip: Bydgoszcz is pronounced By-dgo-shch. Yes, it’s a tough one!
More than a sausage fest
Poland may not be a mainstream foodie destination, but if there’s one thing it’s famous for, it’s the country’s phenomenal sausages.
Okay, okay, pierogis may have something to say about that, but that’s the point.
Poland is a very underrated place to enjoy local cuisine, as the beer and wine scene is also top-notch.
More affordable than a cup of coffee at home, Bydgoszcz is perfect for tasting traditional dishes while still exploring on a budget.
Taking into account cheap buses, flights, trams, hotels, food, what else is there? Ah that’s right, it’s time to stick to Amsterdam!
Visitors who want to give this unpronounceable city a try will love taking about a private boat tour along the canal $6 per ticket.
This beautiful route offers unparalleled views of the crowds Old Town and Mill Islanda renovated neighborhood full of beautiful parks, museums, restaurants and yes, even a beach for lounging in the summer months!
