Who doesn’t need some “me-time”? America’s standard 40-hour work weeks can run us all into the ground, and sometimes we just need to let our minds and bodies catch up.
Going on vacation with friends or loved ones can be fun, but sometimes some time for yourself is just what the doctor ordered.
Take it from me, a frequent solo traveler who has heard all the unwanted feedback in the book about my travel lifestyle.
If it’s not, “You’re running from your problems,” then it’s, “Something bad is going to happen to you!”
Well, if I run, you hide.
Solo travel can be the ultimate reset, and to be honest, very therapeutic. Where to go is always the question.
When you’re alone, it’s important to enjoy yourself and stay within your budget. Not every destination fits the bill, but one Scandinavian country is perfect for those of us willing to venture out into the world on our own.
Between ‘Fika’ and a strong sense of independence, Sweden calls on all individual travelers visits.
Not every Scandinavian country is going bankrupt
Norway and Denmark are not exactly backpackers’ favorite budget destinations. I haven’t been to Denmark, but I have been to Norway three times.
After paying $8 for a Red Bull upon arrival in Oslo in a poor attempt to beat jet lag, I knew my bank account was in for a world of hurt.
However, Sweden does not join its Scandinavian neighbors. Since I had planned a trip myself this fall, I was surprised to discover the low prices of hotels in Stockholm.
I have booked the Sure Hotel by Best Western Stockholm Alvsjo near a transit line for just $45 a night.
No, it’s nothing special, but often solo travelers don’t feel the need to spend on a tight budget.
The Swedish capital Stockholm is where you will probably spend most of your time and money.
In popular coffee culture, a cup of coffee often costs only €2-3. Stockholm is easy to explore public transport (SL) with single rides costing around $4 and even more savings for passes in 24-hour, 72-hour, 7-day and 30-day increments.
Tip: Make sure you keep your transit ticket with you or you risk a $140 fine!
Wonderful cities and breathtaking nature: Sweden has it all!
Sweden’s claim to fame may be Stockholm, a vibrant city that epitomizes Scandinavian charm and innovation, with picturesque cobbled streets, world-class museums and a thriving startup scene.
But there’s a lot more to see than Stockholm, despite it stealing most of the Swedish spotlight.
There’s Malmö, another wallet-friendly city and a gateway to neighboring Denmark, among scattered charming small towns, such as Ystad.
As beautiful and fun as exploring Sweden’s main cities and charming towns are, exploring Sweden’s abundant nature is a whole other world.
Like Iceland, Norway and Finland, add Sweden to the mix to witness the wonders of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), which are best seen from September to March.
Wander Abisko National Park to see the Northern Lights in all their glory and walk scenic trails with a wide range of wildlife such as reindeer and arctic foxes.
You can explore Sweden’s underrated coastline through the UNESCO protected area Höga Kuste also perfect for kayaking the calm waters and exploring local villages.
Between urban explorations and natural wonders, solo travelers will never have a dull moment in this beautiful country.
‘Fika’ culture: a Swedish tradition
After reading about Swedish Fika culture, I’m starting to wonder if I should spit into a tube so 23andMe can trace my Swedish roots.
Outspoken reimbursement-ka, this Swedish custom is not just a coffee break. It is a way of life based on appreciating the smaller things, such as a hot drink and a snack, but focused on social interactions.
It’s a time to de-stress and socialize with others while putting away phones and laptops.
Cafes are popular places to hang out, which gives solo travelers all the more reason to feel comfortable in Sweden.
Knowing Sweden’s reputation for safety makes it an even more attractive destination, as Sweden is listed by the U.S. Department of State Level 2 only for terrorism issues.
