Breathtaking beaches, spectacular waterfalls and even an underwater sculpture park that attracts divers and snorkelers alike.
Grenada may not be the most famous Caribbean island, but it is a beautiful gem that is only growing in popularity.
And it’s easy to understand why!
Visitor numbers to Grenada so far this year are 20% higher than in 2019 and 18% higher than last year.
Although Grenada was hit by Hurricane Beryl earlier this summer, Grenada has recovered incredibly quickly and has remained open to visitors.
Here’s what you need to know about this island paradise:
Why choose Grenada?
Grenada is the definition of an island paradise.
Not only does it boast sugar-sand beaches lined with palm trees, but you’re also never far from lush rainforest, vibrant botanical gardens and spectacular waterfalls.
The Annandale Falls are the most popular of these. Island routes offer a journey to the waterfalls, along with a fascinating herbal tour.
This costs $118 per person.
Grenada is nicknamed ‘The Spice Island’ thanks to the abundance of incredible smelling spices that grow here, so this is a great way to embrace this aspect of the island’s culture too.
One of Grenada’s most unique attractions is the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park. This artificial reef attracts divers and snorkelers from all over the world.
The sculptures were created by renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor and the site is now listed as one of National Geographic’s 25 Wonders of the World.
Dive Grenada offers a snorkeling tour of the underwater sculpture park, with a 2-hour dive at one location costing $65 per person.
Grenada is an incredibly safe island.
And despite the abundance of high-octane activities, the pace of life in Grenada is relatively slow and there is a sleepy, relaxed atmosphere to the island.
This means that if you love nothing more than relaxing on the beach and drinking rum cocktails on your sun lounger, Grenada has plenty to offer.
Affordable flights to Grenada
The vast majority of visitors to Grenada come from the United States.
If you’re willing to take a connecting flight, you can get to Grenada from almost anywhere in the US. But there are three cities that offer direct and affordable flights directly to the island.
They are:
New York – The cheapest direct flights from New York JFK to St George’s in Grenada in the fall are from November 16 to November 20, and if you fly with JetBlue then your return economy ticket will only cost $291.
The flight time for this flight is just under 5 hours for the outbound flight and just over 5 hours for the return flight.
Miami – Direct flights from Miami to St George’s are available operated by American Airlines. For a non-stop economy return flight from November 6 to 10, you pay $667.
This route has the shortest flight time of the 3 options I will mention here. Your outbound flight takes 3 hours 40 and your return flight takes 3 hours 55.
Boston– Direct flights from Boston to Grenada only fly on Saturdays, so this is a good choice if you’re planning a weeklong trip. This flight too operated by JetBlue and is also a wonderfully affordable option.
From November 9 to November 16, you can fly non-stop between the 2 cities for $335. This route has a flight time of 4 hours 38 there and 5 hours 12 minutes return.
Where to stay in Grenada
The vast majority of hotels and resorts on the island are located close to St George’s, which is also home to the island’s airport.
This minimizes your transfer time to your hotel (making your journey as simple and uncomplicated as possible), but this southwestern corner of the island is also where you’ll find many of the most beautiful beaches.
Look towards the horseshoe-shaped Carenage Harbor if you want to be in a picturesque location surrounded by bars and restaurants.
For an affordable and family-friendly option, the Blue Horizons Garden Resort in St George’s is a great choice. This is a charming hotel with a huge swimming pool.
A superior garden view studio for 2 nights, based on 2 people, costs $315 per night.
If you’re looking for something extravagant, the Spice Island Beach Resort is one of the most luxurious hotels on the island. With private pools and refined cuisine, this is the ultimate luxury beach resort.
However, this comes with a much higher price tag: $800 per night for 2 people.
Editor’s Note: I’ve moved my family to Grenada twice and absolutely loved it! My top recommendations would be:
- When you fly in, sit at the very front or back of the plane, so you will be the first to leave the plane and get through customs faster.
- Check out West Indies Beer Co.especially on $2 Tuesdays. That’s 2 Eastern Caribbean dollars! This means that beer actually costs about 75 cents in USD.
- Check out other resorts! You can dine at most resorts without staying there, and they are all beautiful.
- GO TO SPICE MATTERS! Seriously, if you like Indian food, this is the place. I would travel back just for this.
