Island life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Focusing on Bali, there are many frustrations that come with living here and some, ironically, are pointing the finger at the invasion of digital nomads.
More traffic, higher prices, less authenticity – you know, the dreaded G-word that comes with this kind of thing.
Certainly, gentrification is a cause for concern, but the solution may be to trade idyllic island life for the hustle and bustle of big cities that are used to a mix of cultures where you feel welcome.
Asia meets all the requirements for every type of traveler, and not only Taipei personalities.
On this vast continent, digital nomads have a laundry list of great cities to base themselves in.
But it’s time to say goodbye to Bali and hello to the phenomenal city of Bali Taipei, Booking’s ideal destination for digital nomads.
The only thing missing is a Digital Nomad Visa – available soon?
Try to erase the fear-mongering narrative about Taipei in recent years. Those conversations died down.
In reality, Taipei has been on the receiving end of some positive hype lately.
For example, Taiwan’s top destination was recently named Asia most affordable destination based on data from both Kayak and Travel and Leisure.
The budget category is usually a top priority for digital nomads, no matter where they live. The point is that Taipei isn’t going to break the bank across the board.
Other factors include safety, navigability, reliable Wi-Fi connections and comfortable workplaces.
Taipei has raves about all this, including its global reputation as an LGBTQ+ haven.
Plus, there are endless things to do here, including action-packed markets, relaxing hot springs, immaculate temples and panoramic views from one of the tallest buildings in the world.
Never a dull moment between your work tasks!
The only thing missing is an official visa for digital nomads, but work is being done on the streets.
For now, Taiwan offers the Taiwan Employment Gold Card – a work permit, residence permit and re-entry permit in one.
Otherwise, tourists can stay 90 days visa free.
Endless adventures
90 days is more than enough time to explore Taipei and beyond. Digital nomads tend to essentially live out of their backpacks.
You can’t pack a car, and you can never pack materialism, which means sometimes you have to bear the burden of doing things the old-fashioned way.
Here that means exploring on foot or by train – both are great options!
Taiwan recently released an incredible one unlimited rail pass for tourists valid until September.
Given its popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an expansion.
However, train travel is generally very cheap, especially around the city. Tickets cost only 61 cents!
Taipei is made to be explored day and night with amazing natural attractions including free admission Yangmingshan National Park to endless food options, from street vendors to fine dining.
Taiwan may be relatively small, but its easy access allows you to visit a host of cool places, leaving no stone unturned in the most sought-after city.
Tip: If you are an adventurous eater, be sure to try the local delicacy, Stinky Tofu! Smells like a farmyard, but tastes surprisingly good!
Cheap stays and trendy cafes
If you are a full-fledged digital nomad, chances are you don’t order room service in nice hotels, but prefer to arrange your own dinner in a cozy Airbnb or hostel.
The good news is that accommodations in Taipei are very affordable. Expect to pay a maximum of $900, but also look out for great prices in the suburbs, as low as $200!
While you may not want to spend all your time in a capsule hotel, more and more of these unique stays are popping up across Asia, including Taipei.

The city also boasts dozens of new co-working spaces and all you have to do is scroll through #Taipei on TikTok to see all the trendy, eye-catching cafes for boba and coffee.
