Why visit Tulum instead of Cancun
Tulum does one of the most historically charged cities in the Riviera Maya, but also a world-class beach destination packed with luxury resorts, recreational complexes and beachside clubs that are packed with visitors all week long.
It’s the perfect destination if you like to combine cultural outings with relaxation, as it’s home to the well-preserved ruins of Tulum, an archaeological site that is centuries old and predates the arrival of Europeans on the Americas.
Unlike Cancun, a resort town only built in the early 1970s to cater to American guests, Tulum has been here for a while long timeWhat we’re trying to say is that as incredible a sunny escapade as Cancun may be, it lacks that age-old appeal.
At the same time, Tulum is host to a number of five-star historical entries, such as Dream Tulum Resort & Spawhere overnight stays take place starting this fall from $216And Secrets Tulum Resort & Beach Cluba luxury retreat that costs from $301 per night to book.
Is Tulum safe to visit this fall?
We get it; safety will always be one sensitive subject for Americans flying across the southern border, but how many incidents involving American tourists in the Mexican Caribbean have you heard of in the last few months or even the last few years?
We’re not sure about you, but on our side… there have been very fewand those who were indeed unlucky enough to be victims of violence are likely to have been involved in drug trafficking or other illegal activities that the Mexican authorities themselves do not condone.
Simply put, Cancun, Tulum and every other major destination on the Riviera Maya all are completely safe for resort visitors, especially if you limit your freedom of movement to the hotel zone and the downtown area is closely guarded and you are not looking for trouble in the suburbs.
As the US State Department has done declaredTulum – and all of Quintana Roo, the state that also includes Cancun – is currently at level 2meaning Americans are not discouraged from visiting.
They simply need to take some precautions while traveling such as:
- Avoid flashing valuables in public, such as jewelry or expensive watches, or simply leaving them in a hotel safe
- Be aware of their surroundings in certain situations, such as in busy areas or when withdrawing money from ATMs
- Stay away from deserted, poorly lit streets at night, whether it is the central district or more residential areas further away
- Always book tourist activities through reputable providersand the same goes for taxis and intercity transport
