We’ve all seen the pictures of the dreamy beaches and incredible-looking food from all over Mexico this summer, but if you’ve been there yourself (or been around someone who has), you know that this is far from the whole story is. image.
The beaches are overcrowded, you’ll have to wait an obscenely long time to snap a photo or two in front of a famous attraction, and get a dinner reservation at one of those trendy restaurants you’ve seen around the world. place is virtually impossible.
The good news is that if you haven’t decided on a destination yet, you still have time to plan a getaway to Mexico with all the fun, relaxation, and breathtaking scenery you expect, without the crowds.
Take a look at these four underrated gems spread across the country and try to book those tickets while you can!
Mahahual
After years of dealing with unbearable crowds and miles-long lines, I have officially fallen in love with it Mahahualand it’s not hard to understand why.
The once remote fishing village has become one of the country’s trendiest and fascinating beach destinations, while retaining its authentic and laid-back flair. In today’s hectic travel world, this is no easy task!
And if you haven’t yet experienced the Mexican hub firsthand, consider yourself lucky.
You’ll get the chance to take in all its charm as the city enters its low season.
Don’t worry, though; Temperatures are still in a comfortable range of 24°C-32°C (75°F-90°F), so be sure to bring plenty of swimwear.
Your days here are spent taking a peaceful stroll along the city’s Malecón, snorkeling along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, or simply soaking up the sun at Maya Chan Beach (a personal favorite).
And for all my adventurous souls who love to admire the region’s incredible underwater scenery, there are so many great diving centers in Mahahual that it will be difficult to choose just one, but if I were you I would start with or March Adentro or Doctor dive.
Bacalar
Bacalar has long been touted as the next Tulum, but I don’t think the comparison does it justice.
Don’t take my word for it though – The Cancun sun just came out with a report declaring the city the most sought-after destination in the entire Costa Maya tourist corridor.
And don’t forget, most of the available rooms in the area are already sold out, so if you’re looking to book that Bacalar trip soon, check out the article linked above for some great hotel recommendations.
My tip would be to choose the cheapest option that you feel comfortable with; you will spend little to no time in your hotel room anyway,
Instead, you’ll swim in the crystal-clear lagoon, explore the surrounding cenotes and stroll through the narrow streets that take you straight to the historic San Felipe Fortress – it doesn’t get any better than this!
Puerto Morelos
The appeal of Cancun is undeniable: it’s exciting, relaxing and downright beautiful.
But if you’re put off by the crazy crowds and high price tag, there’s a place less than 40 minutes away where you can get a much quieter, more peaceful experience for a fraction of the price – Puerto Morelos.
With its fishing village charm and old-world atmosphere, this often overlooked gem promises a blissful beach getaway, complete with quaint streets, a sweet town square and dreamy weather with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees Celsius.
Of all the places on today’s list, this is probably the one I would most recommend to foodies.
Don’t get me wrong, the other cities all have their fair share of good restaurants, but the chicken fajitas and men you get in El Charro are really in a class of their own.
La Ribera
We end with an even lesser known town located just north of Los Cabos, La Ribera has become one of the trendiest hubs of the season, and given the competition, that’s no easy feat.
While anyone can have the time of their life here, I would especially recommend La Ribera to those who have traveled extensively to Mexico in recent years and are looking for a place to re-experience the types of pristine beaches and crowds. -free landscape that has long been lost in larger cities.
