While it’s true that we probably all have some misconceptions about dentistry, it’s certainly clear that people who put off visiting the dentist the most and who have the worst teeth express the most misconceptions when it comes to modern dentistry.

Strive for healthy teethgums and mouth is one of the most important things anyone can strive for.

So what are the top ten misconceptions about modern dentistry that people who like to think they know it all harp on, but are the complete opposite?

1. Natural is best

Number 1 on our list is that natural means better. Of course, some natural solutions, such as making your own toothpaste, can be valuable, but modern dental treatments offer scientifically validated, effective solutions.

2. The more expensive, the better

Next on our list is the misconception that expensive means better. Wrong! Costs do not always translate into more effectiveness or better quality. Many Australians choose to undergo treatment abroad, in health centers such as Thailand, where the procedures are much cheaper and just as good.

3. It’s all about looks

Third, there is still a misconception that dentistry is cosmetic. This causes people to underestimate the importance of dentistry – it’s not just about appearance – oral health is a foundation for holistic wellbeing.

4. It’s going to hurt

What many people who avoid the dentist think is that it will be painful. Of course there may be discomfort, but advances in anesthetics and the science of pain management have alleviated this. Remember, it will probably hurt more – in your mouth and in your wallet – if you put it off!

5. You should only go to the dentist if you have a problem

You hear many people say that they only go to the dentist if they have a toothache. Crazy. Regular checks are crucial and can help prevent problems further down the line. Ever heard the expression “prevention is better than cure” – the professional specialists of Seen definitely have!

6. Bleach products are harmful

Misconception number 6 on our list is that whitening products are harmful to teeth. Even over-the-counter bleaching products are safe when used properly. Whitening under professional supervision is best of all.

7. Braces are not for adults

The next thing is that braces are only for kids. While it is true that some corrective procedures for misaligned teeth are better performed in the early years, there is plenty of evidence that adults benefit from using things like braces and modern plastic clear aligners.

8. If you brush well enough, you don’t need to floss

Flossing is not necessary, as long as you brush properly, is fallacy number eight. Although it has been proven that electric toothbrushes can reach between the interdental spaces better, a normal toothbrush certainly cannot. Unfortunately, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’s dentist father kept this up because he was proud that Will had never flossed. A horror from Christopher Lee!

9. Root canals are dangerous

The idea that root canals are painful and dangerous is… dangerous, nonsense, isn’t it! Period. Modern dentistry is so much better than it was years ago.

10. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have healthy teeth

Finally, never believe anyone who tells you there is no connection between good teeth and longevity.

Regular visits to the dentist can add happy years to your life!
