When you hear about fascinating ruins near picturesque Italian beaches, the first thing that comes to mind is none other than Rome.
But Italy is teeming with both cultural wealth and beautiful beaches along its vast borders.
When you come to Italy, it’s not one of those places you just have to visit. You know, flying to Venice and then straight back home.

Italy is destined to be explored, and some of its lesser-known gems may even leave more lasting memories than the household names.
A small example: many recent tourists say that Naples has become far too sketchy and chose to fly there and straight to the Amalfi Coast, where there are beautiful towns that you may have never heard of.
But there is one region that should certainly not be overlooked. That would be Calabria, a province in the southwest of Italy, where the beautiful coastal town is located Crotonwhere historic ruins meet beautiful beaches.
Swap the hustle and bustle of Rome for the deeply rooted historical sites of Crotone

There may not be a Colosseum, but that doesn’t mean Crotone isn’t packed with fascinating locations.
Like many cities around the world, it all starts with the Old Town, which is the closest thing our modern world has to a time capsule.
Here it is typically Italian with narrow streets, picturesque squares and historic architecture that radiates charisma.
Wake up with the perfect cappuccino, explore the city on foot and finish with a perfect dinner among centuries-old buildings.

But that’s not why you’re really here: the Old Town is the gateway to the city’s deep roots. You see, Crotone dates all the way back to 710 BC (or 718 BC, depending on who you ask).
One of the most unmissable sights is the 16th-century Crotone Cathedral, while most will take home dozens of photos of the city’s many ancient ruins, stretching the timeline back even further.
Perhaps the most striking is Da Capo Colonna a Le Castella, where the remains of this Greek-era castle sit on the city’s azure waters – a must-see for any visitor.
But the most accessible and, according to some, the most popular Castello di Carlo Va beautiful historical monument that stands out among the vibrant cityscape.
The ‘Pearl of Calabria’

It seems like every place has a nickname these days and Crotone is no different as it embraces the name ‘Pearl of Calabria’.
Not every heavenly European beach destination has incredible timeless locations in the background, making Crotone a rarity.
This underrated city will leave you enchanted by both its historical intrigue and beautiful coastlines all rolled into one.
Le Castella and Marinella are both two of the most popular spots for sun and sand here, known for the crystal clear waters that you can still swim in in the early months of autumn.

Be sure not to miss the nearby Capo Colonna Marine Reserve to take advantage of the best snorkeling areas.
Of course, you need to sleep for a while, even if you doze off on the beach. There are plenty of bed and breakfasts, boutique hotels and holiday homes, all with fantastic sea views, and better yet: very affordable!
All of the above can be booked this autumn less than $100 per night. If it were me, I’d be bawling my eyes out B&B Benvenuti al Sud for just $71, located along a strip of quiet beaches, away from the city center.
Italy + the sea = You know you’re eating well!
Italy isn’t always popular with budget travelers, but you can eat pretty well here without double-checking your bank account.

Finding beer for a few dollars is common, and indulging in Italian cuisine won’t break the bank either.
The Old Town is home to some truly beautiful eateries, some where the food and views are equally amazing.
In the upper price level Al LanterNino may the cake (or tiramisu).
A recent patron described it as ‘very luxurious and refined food, including raw foods such as shrimp, oysters and various types of fish. The wine list is also fantastic’.
But many would say that the best (and cheapest!) dining experience you will have here is to visit the local markets held all year round and discover the freshest foods.
