One of the most common questions travelers ask about Mexico is, “Is it safe?”
It is true that there are certain parts of Mexico that American travelers are not allowed to visit. These include states like Colima, Sinaloa and Guerrero.
But Los Cabos is not one of them!
In fact, no high-impact crimes have been recorded in the city at all in recent months according to the Tribuna de Mexico.
And this officially makes Los Cabos one of the safest tourist destinations you can visit in Mexico.
There have been no crimes or thefts in Los Cabos this month.
The only crimes reported are domestic violence and low-level fraud (which usually doesn’t bother tourists).
Here’s why Los Cabos is one of the safest destinations in Mexico and a great place for travelers this winter:
The beautiful beaches of Los Cabos
Los Cabos is a popular vacation spot on the Baja California Peninsula, right on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
This means you can enjoy endless ocean views, which explains why the region is so famous for its stunningly beautiful beaches.
It’s worth noting that only some of the beaches in Los Cabos are swimmable, so if getting in the ocean is a crucial part of your holiday (for me it is!), then the best beaches to visit in the region are:
- Medano beach. Located in the region’s largest resort area, this is the longest swimmable beach in Los Cabos. The beach here is popular and has a busy, bustling atmosphere.
- Lovers beach. For something more remote, Lovers Beach can only be reached by boat. Take a snorkeling trip to Lovers Beach with Cabo San Lucas Tours for only $19.50. I chose this tour because it is on a glass bottom boat so you can see the sea life below during your journey.
- Santa Maria Beach. This is another remote beach, but you can reach it independently using the local bus service. This beach is quiet but great for swimming and snorkeling, so choose this if you want plenty of space and peace.
Why is Los Cabos so popular?
One of the main reasons why Los Cabos is so popular is because it is so easy to visit.
If you’re looking for a fly-and-flop holiday (where you don’t really have to think), this is a great place to go.
Los Cabos boasts an abundance of glitzy all-inclusive resorts, so all you need to do is bring your swimmers and a suitcase full of resort clothes and be prepared to relax and unwind!
I did some research to discover the best all-inclusive resorts in Los Cabos. There are so many to choose from, but according to traveler reviews, these are 3 of the best:
- Big Velas. These are glitzy and luxurious all-inclusive resorts that are at the very top end of the budget scale. This sleek and modern resort has been awarded 5 diamonds by the AAA. A 2 night stay from October 8 to October 10 for 2 adults costs $1,346 per night for the most affordable room type.
- Marquis Los Cabos. This resort is for adults only, so it’s an excellent choice if you want some peace and relaxation away from the excitement of children. The excellent service is seen as one of the highlights of this resort. It is also a much cheaper choice. A 2 night stay from October 8 to October 10 for 2 adults costs $460 per night.
- Paradise Los Cabos. This hotel is another adults only resort and part of the Melia group. It features clean white suites, beautiful pools and a relaxed atmosphere. You pay $494 per night to stay here.
How safe is Los Cabos?
I already mentioned above that Los Cabos is considered one of the safest regions in Mexico.
But how does it compare to other Mexican resorts? Creating security in the country is a bit tricky, thanks to the The US State Department’s complicated security assessment.
Typically, countries are given a high safety rating of 1-4, with 1 being the safest (normal exercise precautions) and 4 meaning US travelers should visit the country (do not travel).
But there is no one security classification for Mexico: instead, security is broken down from region to region.
Los Cabos is located in the state of Baja California Sur. This has been given a Level 2 (Exercise Heightened Caution) safety rating by the US Department of State due to crime.
But as the numbers higher up in this piece clearly show, crime is not a concern for visitors to Los Cabos.
This goes a long way toward explaining why this is such a safe and welcoming destination for American travelers right now.
