So much for the Mayan calendar, eh? Well, you may wonder if yours is right too.
While many of us this time of year feel compelled to drink pumpkin concoctions, don a dusty flannel from the back of the closet and hit the back roads for some incredibly vibrant scenery, some places just haven’t gotten the memo. that have changed the seasons.
September 22 may have marked the official start of fall 2024, but the summer atmosphere is ever-present with the endless amounts of fall leaves.
According to MySAa local news publication in San Antonio, the beautiful seaside town South Padre Island is the place to be where summer is not over yet.
With perfect afternoon temperatures around 80 degrees, the Gulf feels like bathwater.
All the autumn splendor can wait at home; you’ll be enchanted by your new island life of palm trees, white sand and affordable beachfront resorts in this slice of Texas paradise.
34 miles of white sandy beaches
There is no shame in South Padre’s game; their tourism board proudly flaunts their claim to fame as a 35-mile barrier island with “white sand and clear emerald water.”
Now even the colorblind can tell you that Pater white is not Maldives white, so let’s temper expectations here.
And before we go any further, a little note for Crayola – Padre White is my original idea, so I better not see my niece coloring with a new color of crayon!
As a born and raised Texan, I can attest that everything, and I mean everything, is an upgrade from Galveston, another coastal town where locals escape for sun, sand and certainly not white sand and emerald waters.
To summarize Galveston for you, the last time I was there I stepped on a dirty diaper. ‘Nuff said?
South Padre may share the Gulf with Galveston, but they’re apples and oranges in comparison.
Padre is a tried-and-true beach town paradise that’s close to Mexico, in a part of Texas that far too often goes under the radar, mainly because of the deals you can score during the off-season!
You may want to avoid the crowds of Spring Breakers here, but fall is pure happiness and the ultimate savings for a fun vacation.
Tip: Isla Blanca is number 1 TripAdvisor outside the beaches of South Padre
Book a beach resort this fall for less than $100 a night
You can’t get much closer to Mexico than South Padre Island.
Many vacationers overlook this Texas escape for a sexier Mexican vacation with the likes of Cancun, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta across the border.
Travelers usually spend their entire salary to stay there. If only they had known about Padre…
Beach resorts are very affordable here at the moment. In fact, if you were to book a last-minute holiday for September, you’d be shocked!
For example, the Margaritaville Beach Resort costs as little as $88 on select dates starting September 30, and as low as $75 in mid-October.
Better yet, there are plenty more to choose from just in case Parrot head vibes are a bit too much to handle.
Here are 3 more excellent resort deals this fall: (in order of lowest rate found on Google Travel)
- Sand Rose Beach Resort – $60
- Holiday Inn Resort on South Padre Island – $84
- Peninsula Island Resort & Spa – $93
What to do and how to get here
Even though MySA rejected my application for a reporter role, they still chose the right beach in Texas to showcase as a tourist destination because it is so suitable for all ages and interests.
MySA mentions that there is plenty of wildlife on the Laguna Madre Nature Trail Sea Turtle Inc. are excellent options for tourists to see the region’s vast array of wildlife, with the ladder up close and personal
Besides lazing in the sun with the tide at your feet, there are many more fun water activities to consider.
For the more adventurous, parasailing and jet skiing are always top choices, while those seeking relaxation can choose from snorkeling on their own or the many fishing or dolphin watching excursions, such as Top Class Captain Murphy’s Deep Sea Fishing.
Remember, this is a popular spring break outing for a reason, so there are still lively bars to choose from in the fall Clayton’s, the ‘largest beach bar in Texas’‘ or more casual venues, such as Tequila Sunset Bar & Grill.
I don’t know about you, but they had me at ‘Tequila’ and ‘Sunset’.
Getting to South Padre is easy because they share an airport (BRO) with nearby Brownsville, where United and American offer flights year-round.
