Beautiful, warm and beachy – no wonder so many Americans fall in love with Costa Rica every year.
After announcing a brand new tourism record in January, the Central American country is still welcoming more American travelers than ever (and to think that high season hasn’t even started yet!).
But should you plan a much-needed tropical retreat?
I’m afraid the answer is yes, and here’s why:
The perfect time for a beach holiday
Don’t let all the Halloween decor give you the wrong impression – this is actually the perfect time for that dream beach vacation of yours, especially in Costa Rica.
Why go when it’s expensive, crowded and scorching hot when you can plan your trip in September and October and get the best of all worlds?
I know, I know – technically we’re still in what’s considered the country’s rainy season, but locals actually call these months ‘green’ to describe the fact that the showers are not only short, but also generally limited to late afternoons and nights. giving you plenty of (albeit still precious) time to enjoy the Costa Rican sun during the day.
You don’t even have to worry about the temperatures – ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, they’re perfect for a sunbathing session that won’t leave you drenched in sweat.
And to top it all off, you avoid the crazy high season (which usually lasts from December to April).
That means a more private, enjoyable experience, less crowded attractions and a much, much easier time getting the bookings you want.
Even more expensive hotels like this The Springs Resort & Spa in Arenal And Nayara Springs have reduced their nightly room rates by almost 30% to compensate for the drop in customer demand, so if you’re looking for a premium experience at a much more reasonable price tag, now’s the time to book!
Flights this month start at just $89
And the good news keeps coming!
October is officially the cheapest time of year to fly from the US to Costa Rica Skyscannerwith round-trip tickets from just $177 – that works out to just over $88 each way, and that’s for a direct flight from Fort Lauderdale to San Jose.
And even if you go further north, prices don’t rise too much – a round-trip ticket costing less than $500 is feasible from virtually all major US cities. Just make sure you compare prices on different platforms to ensure you get the best deal.
A safe haven, perfect for families and solo travelers
Costa Rica has developed a reputation for being expensive, and honestly, by Central American standards, it is.
Most hotels (especially those on the beach) charge prices comparable to what you would find here in the US, a good meal for two will probably exceed the $60 mark, and taxis are more often than not unreasonably expensive (which Therefore, I recommend that you use a reputable online booking platform where you can agree and pay the rate in advance).
However, what the country lacks in good prices, it makes up for in safety.
While normal precautions like avoiding deserted areas at night and staying aware of your surroundings are always a good idea, Costa Rica is by far one of the best countries to visit in Central America, especially if you’re traveling alone or with the family travels. and are extra concerned about their safety.
So much to see and do
And considering how much there is to see and explore in the rainforest, making sure you feel peaceful and at ease while you’re outdoors goes a long way.
Now you obviously want to go on at least one nature excursion. After all, you’ve come to a place known for being home to more than 25% of the world’s biodiversity.
My top picks are Corcovado, Tortuguero, the Arenal Volcano, and the beautiful Monteverde Cloud Forest, but if you’re into water sports, you’ll also want to add Playa Hermosa and the Catalina Islands to your itinerary.
Since you’re coming in the fall, you’ll probably want to plan a coffee tour: it’s harvest season now!
I can’t recommend the one from Café Noordveld enough!
