Do you have Georgia in mind? Many of us do!

In fact, it was just announced that Georgia has done just that broken tourist records yet again.

The main getaways we all long for are of course the bustling city of Atlanta, followed by the timeless Southern Clock of Savannah, depending on your mood.

Atlanta has been making headlines lately as one of the cheapest city breaks in the US, while Savannah has long been a draw for those who prefer “Southern hospitality” and quintessential small-town charm.

As such, you’ll be virtually alone when you visit Savannah, sharing photos with tourists of countless postcard-worthy historic homes to quaint parks and old-fashioned streets.

But there’s one city in Georgia, just north of Atlanta, that’s super easy to get to, yet often overlooked.

The beautiful town Marietta features all the charm of Savannah, but without the crowds!

Atlanta has many fascinating facets, but as we all know, every big city comes with travel frustrations.

One of the most common problems for tourists in Atlanta is the constant traffic!

But that’s okay. All you have to do is take the exit marked ‘Marietta’ and your problem is solved!

On a good day, Marietta is less than half an hour from the ATL, which explains why this hidden gem is overshadowed by the allure of Atlanta.

Conversely, Savannah is almost a 4-hour drive because it is located along the coast, making Marietta much easier to reach from one of America’s busiest hubs, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Marietta may not have a towering skyline, professional sports teams or the World of Coca-Cola (yes, it’s a real place!), but that’s all part of what makes this beautiful city more enticing to visit.

Discover the charm of the city center

Many places in the South exude small-town charm with historic buildings, boutiques and old-fashioned diners.

Check, check, check all of the above in Marietta.

What makes a visit to the city center here special, however, is the bustling ‘Square’, where locals and famous travelers come day and night for a good time.

The city’s motto is even ‘Meet me on the square’. When the city was buzzing with action, it most likely started in Marietta Square.

Surrounded by great dining options, plentiful shopping, a picturesque park and even the Museum of HistoryMarietta can be your main stay or day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta, while at the same time exuding a similar charm that you would find in Savannah.

Southern hospitality and beautiful architecture will make you forget the hustle and bustle of Savannah as you mingle with the locals.

One of the most popular times to visit is during the craft and farmers markets held in the square every week, but upcoming events Chalktoberfest and Autumn festival of fun are undoubtedly circled on many calendars.

Of course, a visit to the South is not a visit without eating something delicious! Nearby Marietta Square Market is home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars serving a wide variety of cuisines from Korean, wood-fired pizza to Jamaican.

Tip: For the best Southern cuisine, go to the critically acclaimed Cuisine The Marietta Local just off the square, serving classics like Fried Chicken and Collard Greens.

Go outside! Marietta is beautiful in the fall

You may be enchanted by the feel of Marietta’s hometown, but don’t forget to explore the suburbs!

While leaf-peepers flock in search of the perfect fall photos, Marietta is one of the South’s best-kept secrets for wandering through nature.

There are plenty of scenic hiking trails within easy reach, especially through the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park with breathtaking colorful views and the Chattahoochee Nature Center – you know, way over there.

Except it’s no hotter than hoochie coochie this time of year.

For one of the easiest hikes, head to Indian Seats for just 4 miles (6.2 kilometers) through a vibrant canopy in the vast Sawnee Mountain Preserve, less than an hour from Marietta.
