There’s a reason why millions of Americans choose Mexico as their top vacation destination.

More often than not, it’s to a pristine beach like Cancun, Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta.

These places are great for catching rays and waves, but if there’s a common denominator for what’s missing, it’s Mexico’s amazing culture.

Sure, you might see an unfamiliar menu item that you don’t often encounter at home, but taking a deep dive into Mexico’s roots is a whole different story.

Since Mexico’s most popular beach vacations are unanimously aimed at tourists, an urban adventure is the ultimate way to immerse yourself in extraordinary traditions and cultural delights.

This is never a bad idea, but what makes it even better is when it’s affordable!

According to GOBanking RatesThese 2 authentic cultural outings fit perfectly with your next autumn holiday.

Mexico City: a huge maze of cultural contrasts

If you can turn a blind eye to the multitude of American chains like Starbucks, McDonald’s and Domino’s, there are captivating locations mixed with modern wonders to behold in Ciudad de Mexico.

Of course, for people with a language barrier like me, we simply say Mexico City.

This vibrant Mexican metropolis never gets old to visit; it’s honestly one of my favorite getaways, whether it’s for a weekend or a week-long adventure.

After visiting five times, the city limits are so vast that it is difficult to put into words.

The thing is, I seem to discover something new every time I visit, yet I still feel like I’ve only scratched the surface.

To really get a sense of the heartbeat of Mexico City, I can’t recommend street markets enough.

Although it is said to avoid Tepito, you will find many vendors set up on sidewalks and parks throughout the city.

Alameda Central is one of my favorites when it comes to browsing rows of stalls and eating some delectable local dishes, as it is rarely crowded.

As you’ve probably guessed, tacos are more than a light meal here: they’re a way of life (and cheap, too!).

There are countless ways to explore Mexico City’s wide range of cultural experiences, but here are 5 of my favorites:

  • Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum
  • Drive one trajinera through the canals of Xochimilco
  • Wander through Chapultapec Park
  • Order tacos at Mercado Coyoacan
  • Visit the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacán

According to GOBankingRates, travelers can live on $500 a week in Mexico City, where food, hotels, and especially public transportation are super affordable.

Oaxaca: Mexico’s timeless historic city

If there is one city, it is unmistakable Real Mexico, it’s Oaxaca.

Unlike Mexico City in many ways, as you won’t see skyscrapers or recognizable luxury hotels here, Oaxaca has remained true to its identity with age-old traditions and fascinating culture, despite becoming a trendy destination in recent years.

It is generally considered safe to visit and hopping from place to place is a must, whether it’s centuries-old cathedrals, vibrant markets or simply exploring its striking squares and rows of vibrant buildings.

Of course, Oaxaca is not only a city, but also a state.

Although the city is incredible to visit, many tourists opt for beach trips to nearby Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, both much more culturally rich than, say, Los Cabos.

When I visited the city, it couldn’t have been clearer. Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s best foodie destinations.

You can’t go wrong with mole, enchiladas or any of the specialty dips mezcalerias serving up the best of the best of tequila’s smoky cousin.

I highly recommend eating (and drinking responsibly). Sabina Sabe located in a vibrant blue-green building, one of many colorful buildings in the city and featured in The 50 best restaurants in the world.

According to GOBankingRates, travelers can expect to budget $450 per week, so exploring Oaxaca will be a breeze.

Be sure to visit nearby ruins such as Monte Alban lively festivities held all year round.

Honorable mention: Mexico’s cheap city with European flair

It doesn’t feel right, not to mention perhaps my favorite place to visit in Mexico, the European-esque city Guanajuato.

It’s never hard to find cheap food and affordable accommodation, and let’s just say you don’t have to fly across the world to see mummies!

Plus, they have Uber to get around.

Better yet, you can stay in a historic castle under $70 this fall! To read more about this underrated destination, head here.
