Paris is the city of love, right? Maybe not anymore!
And the good news is that American travelers don’t have to travel far to visit the world’s new, most romantic destination.
A new survey of American travelers conducted by Research on talkers thought that Maui in Hawaii was named the new top romantic travel destination, winning 34% of the votes.
That is a full percentage point higher than Paris, which received 33% of the votes.
So why is a trip to Maui considered so romantic? And what does Maui have to offer that the official city of love doesn’t?
Beautiful and romantic beaches
Maui may not have the Eiffel Tower, but it does have some of the best beaches in the world.
And 55% of Americans think a walk on the beach is the most romantic thing you can do on vacation.
Maui is home to more than 30 miles of beaches. Some of the best on the island are the large and small beaches of Makena Beach State Park.
This is the most iconic and most photographed beach on the island.
If you like water sports, try Honolua Bay.
This is a sought-after beach for snorkeling and surfing, making it an excellent choice for couples with a strong sense of adventure.
If you want something a little more off the beaten track, try Palauea Beach, which is much more popular with locals than tourists.
So if you want to try something different and get away from the crowds, this will suit your needs best.
Please note that because this beach is not on the tourist radar, it is not suitable for tourists like the other beaches on this list.
You will not find toilets and shower facilities here.
Iconic and breathtaking landscape
In addition to its beautiful beaches, Maui is also famous for its green landscapes, lush rainforests, waterfalls and mountains.
The volcanic Haleakala is the highest peak on the island and is popular with hikers.
If spending time outdoors is your idea of a great date, then you’ll be spoiled for options here.
One of the island’s most iconic locations for outdoor activities is Wai’ānapana State Park. This is a remote and rugged park with a volcanic coastline, a natural stone arch and vibrant greenery.
A Reservations are required to visit Wai’ānapana State Park, so plan ahead!
Admission is $5 per person for non-Hawaii residents and $10 per vehicle to use the parking lot.
Perhaps Maui’s most beautiful natural attractions are its epic waterfalls. The most famous of these are the Wailua Falls, actually three waterfalls next to each other.
Hawaii Tours offers a waterfall and rainforest hiking tour on the island. Besides seeing the falls, you can also swim in them and jump into the water from rock ledges, making it a great trip for thrill seekers. The tour costs $159 per person.
Where to stay in Maui
Hawaii is America’s honeymoon capital, so it makes sense that there are an abundance of hotels and resorts perfect for romance on the island.
If you are looking for a secluded location and value privacy, try the Ho’oilo House Bed and Breakfast. This 4-star hotspot has been voted Maui’s most luxurious B&B. Some rooms offer epic views of the Pacific Ocean, others have a lavish outdoor bathroom. Prices start from $400 per night.
If you prefer a larger resort, try the Fairmont Kea Lani. Awarded a Tripadvisor Travelers Choice Award for 2024, this hotel has a reputation for luxury and quality of gastronomic experiences.
Although children are welcome here, there is an adults-only pool and an extensive fitness and wellness program for adult guests.
Direct beach access means you can watch the sunset over the water and take those all-important romantic walks along the beach. Prices start from $828 per night.
