The New Year often gives us permission to dream big with lofty goals.

However, some of us stick to the script. Such is the case for an Irish city that most of us have probably never heard of.

As I’m sure you know, Dublin is the most popular destination in Ireland. To say you’re going to dethrone your country’s tourism king is a classic ‘David vs. Goliath’ story in the making.
The relaxed coastal city is about half an hour’s drive from the busy streets of Dublin Balbriggan located along the scenic Muir Éireann (the Irish Sea).
A lot of money has been deposited into the city with huge dreams, hoping to not only earn a place at the table with Ireland’s many captivating destinations, but also to take over the title Ireland’s best travel hotspot in 2025.
A fast-growing city ready to thrive!


Balbriggan is one of Ireland’s youngest and fastest growing towns, so the charm of its Old Town is no match for the screen-swiping era of locals looking to give this underrated town a makeover.
There’s no doubting the beauty of Balbriggan, but tourists want to do more than just gaze at the beautiful coast.
According to the Irish Star, almost $28 million has been contributed to transform the city into a major hub for visitors at home and abroad.
$15 million of that money has gone toward attracting more visitors to the scenic waterfront.
Balbriggan Harbor is taking on a new shine and becoming one of the city’s tourist attractions.


The newly designed district will include a multifunctional square and a spacious city park, which will be used for lively events such as festivals and markets.
Although no official word specifically mentions hotels, this region will likely build on its success to continue attracting visitors.
There is talk of new facilities including boathouses, so perhaps there will be more fun boat trips to explore the Irish Sea in the future!
A mix of old and new


Locals have voiced their support to rebrand their beloved city, with the main focus being the Harbor and Quay Street, a historic boulevard deeply rooted in the city’s fishing industry and coincidentally located next to one of the city’s top luxury hotels , the 4-star hotel Bracken Court Hotel.
The latest events will transform both sides of the harbor viaduct and the top of Quay Street, making Balbriggan’s beautiful beaches all the more attractive to visit.
That said, not everything in Balbriggan will be shiny and new.
You can expect the same Irish charm you find in Dublin and several smaller towns across the country, right here in Balbriggan.

With most projects expected to be completed “by the end of 2025,” there’s never a bad time to see the more traditional side of the city.
As you would expect, Balbriggan is home to incredibly well-preserved castles. It is Ireland after all!
You can enjoy the amazing sites of the centuries-old Ardgillan Castle and Demesne with tours for just $5.50.


And since you’re not spending a lot of money, what better way to visit Balbriggan than having a pint in a local pub?

The beautiful beaches of Balbriggan
Since 2025 is the target, you might as well plan ahead for next year’s Irish beach season. Even though it’s too busy in the fall and winter, don’t get lost in the hype of the city’s latest upgrades; the beaches are beautiful!


Balbriggan Beach is the main beach, but other beaches such as King’s Strand and Hampton Cove are also worth a visit.
However, the hidden gem just might be Ladies stairshidden behind Ardgillan Castle and Demesne, so you can knock out two of the best attractions in one place.
