Home to breathtaking views, timeless streets, and a family-friendly fall train ride, the beautiful town of Frostburg, Maryland makes for the perfect fall getaway.
Frostburg’s inviting historic downtown
Frostburg may be small, but it packs a punch! Nestled in the heart of the vast Alleghany Mountains lies this picturesque town of approximately 7,000 residents.
Not to mention the students from the city’s own Frostburg State University, which, as you can imagine, brings the community alive with lively bars and sporting events.
They even have their own ‘beach’ that will reopen soon Frostburg Beach Club. Jimmy Buffet vibes in the mountains? Sign me up!
After all, you are in Maryland, so you should enjoy all the crab dishes as much as possible!
Although the ‘Beach Club’ is an unexpected delight, there is much more to see and do. Downtown Frostburg even promotes one Historical tour with classic eateries, intriguing museums and old-fashioned hotels.
If it were me, I would enjoy small town charm in historic Allegheny Trail Housecalled a renovated Bed and Breakfast ‘bicycle friendly’ to give you an impression of how people like to spend their time here.
The center is very bicycle and pedestrian friendly, especially in the fall. You can enjoy the fresh mountain air with a hot cup of coffee in hand at one of the many delicious cafes, such as the top-rated Clatter Cafe, or head to one of the city’s landmarks, Main Street Books, to cozy up with a new book to read. .
All in all, you should not miss the city center, even if you are only here to enjoy the wonderful natural surroundings.
Visitors love the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
There’s no better way to explore the region than boarding what has become the area’s most popular attraction: the Scenic Railroad of Western Maryland (WMSR).
Now is the perfect time to plan ahead to head to western Maryland to witness the state’s most beautiful sites.
While Baltimore is one of the most underrated cities on the East Coast, Frostburg is undoubtedly the most underrated small-town getaway, especially since the fall colors are now in full bloom.
There are two train rides that the WMSR is offering this fall that you should keep an eye on, including one fun ride that is happening right now.
You can still get tickets for the Frostburg Flyer – a fall-themed trip that runs through November 3.

There is a 90-minute stop in Frostburg to enjoy all the delights of the city before returning to the station.
Please note that all WMSR trains depart and return in the neighboring city of Cumberland.
Everyone aboard the Polar Express!
The next one is more of a winter excursion, but starts just after Thanksgiving on November 29th. The WMSRs Polar Express is celebrating its 20th anniversary, so you know it’s a hit!
While you’ll certainly still see some colorful tree lines, this hour-long ride is all about spreading holiday cheer with hot chocolate and cookies served, and of course, a Santa meet ‘n greet.
Tickets are for sale from $40 from November 29 – Christmas Eve.
