As fun as planning a European getaway sounds right now, the process doesn’t always go as it should.
Most of us only get a few chances (if at all) to fly to the Old Continent, so when the opportunity arises, figuring out which places are actually worth a spot on your bucket list is a must – Who knows when else you’ll get the chance to go on holiday across the Atlantic Ocean?
I know choosing between dozens of beautiful countries, looking for one or two that offer the best value, can be overwhelming to say the least, so today we’re taking a shortcut and seeing where the rest are heading this fall.
That way, you’ll get all the inspiration you need with little to no actual work or research.
The European Travel Commission just released a report on the latest seasonal trends, and among some of the classic hubs we already know and love, there was one surprising country that took the No. 5 spot, so be sure to stick around until the end.
1. France
To no one’s surprise, France was once again named Europe’s most coveted destination.
People are taking full advantage of the post-Olympic downtime and all the newly announced routes that are helping to connect more Americans than ever with the most visited country in the world – it’s a sure-fire recipe for a new tourism high!
And while a stop in Paris is of course non-negotiable, I would like to take this opportunity to urge you to explore France beyond its (admittedly) beautiful capital this fall.
Go on one wine tasting In Provence, walk the winding paths of Alsace and enjoy the vibrant city life of Lyon – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
2. Italy
Having just returned from an incredible trip to Milan, I know I can’t wait to plan my next Italian getaway – the architecture, the food, the culture – it really is a feast for the senses.
However, if it’s your first time in the country, it would be a good idea to prioritize world-class hubs like Rome, Florence, and Venice (I’d say in that exact order). The better-known hubs can undoubtedly be busier than you’d like, but they’re still unmissable gems that exude that oh-so-coveted Italian charm.
However, I am currently looking forward to a Tuscan holiday.
Between the wine, the truffles and all the breathtaking views, it seems like the perfect place for the fall vacation of a lifetime!
3. Spain
If you’ve been keeping up with travel-related news over the past year, you know that Spain has broken all tourism records.
If you’ve ever actually been to the Iberian country, you know very well why.
And between the otherworldly atmosphere of Barcelona, the charm of the big city of Madrid and all the flamenco festivals taking place in Seville in the coming months, autumn is without a doubt the perfect time to make that dream holiday in Spain a reality – but if you want a great If you want to find a place to stay, you have to hurry, hotels book up quickly.
4. Greece
My love for Greece is well documented, and can you really blame me?
How many places on earth promise the same old-world charm, paradise islands and sunny Mediterranean weather?
Sure, temperatures may have cooled down enough that a beach session isn’t an option once you get here, but with places like Athens, Thessaloniki and Chania, the cityscape across the country is more than enough to keep you going. you’ve been having fun all fall.
5. Czech Republic
It outperforms countries like Germany, Portugal, Austria and even Great Britain. Czech Republic (or Czech Republic, as known to many) surprised travelers around the world when it secured the prestigious number 5 position in ETC’s seasonal trends report.
It seems that people are looking beyond the famous sights and famous names and are instead looking for overall value – and that is exactly what the Central European country promises.
Prague easily offers one of the best value for money of any comparable capital, and at this time the city has turned into a mosaic of beautiful Gothic buildings bathed in the amber autumn light.
So buy a koláče and walk through Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and Old Town Square – you’ll feel like you’ve been transported straight to your own movie set.
