Holbox is one of the top choices for travelers heading to the Mexican Caribbean this season. It is a car-free island that has yet to experience the dark side of tourism and is largely protected from overdevelopment thanks to its status as a nature reserve.
Moreover, it actually encourages tourists to do so come Through lowering accommodation prices and even ferry tickets significantly:
30% discount on hotels this season!
As reported by the Cancun sunthe leading English source for all things Mexican Caribbean, hotels and private accommodation providers in Holbox are offering up to 30 percent off overnight stays on the island in a bid to boost the less impressive visitor numbers.
This means that you can now find hotels in Holbox for less than $100 per nightwith some of the cheapest deals from mid-November Booking.com listed below:
All rates above refer to standard double or deluxe rooms in 3 or 4 star accommodation and do not include all-inclusive deals. That said, the cheapest all-inclusive offer is Mystique Holbox from Royaltonwith nightly rates from a surprisingly affordable $217.
Why does Holbox lower prices?
With such attractive rates, you might wonder what it is that Holbox doesn’t attract hundreds of thousands of visitors, and whether there’s something, well, ‘wrong’ with it.
The answer is simple: we are in the middle of an active hurricane season and in response, visitor numbers have dropped slightly. Holbox remains very safe to visitas the authorities are well prepared to tackle the natural phenomenon.
Hurricane warnings are issued immediately in the event of a landfall, and hotels are well equipped to keep guests protected and out of harm’s way in the unlikely event that a particularly disruptive storm hits the otherwise peaceful island.
Many tourists think that because it is high season for hurricanes, the island is not prepared to receive them, but as Christian Stenta, vice president of the local Association of Hotels, has stated, discounts are given precisely to prove to them that Holbox is a low risk to visit.
In his own words, the recent hurricanes caused Helene and Milton no significant material damageand services on the island are back to normal.
Another 30% discount, this time on ferries and buses to Holbox
In addition to the big discount on accommodation, tourists visiting Holbox in the coming weeks will also pay less to come to the island itself.
As you should know by this point, the only way to reach Holbox is to take a ferry from Chiquila, a municipality across the island on the mainland. only 25 minutes complete.
Tickets cost about $18, the equivalent of 300 Mexican pesos, so now you would expect to get a even cheaper $12.60 to get on the boat.
But wait, there’s more!
In addition to hotels and the ferry, you also pay 30% less to ride the bus from Cancun to Chiquita, the most common route for independent travelers traveling to Holbox who have not rented a car. Prices will drop from $19 – 20 to $13.30 –14.
The perfect alternative to a bustling coast
Holbox is typically one of the quietest destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, due to its limited capacity compared to the resort-lined Riviera Maya and its appeal for being much more exclusive than overcrowded Cancun.
It’s even less busy nowwith declining visitor numbers, despite the fact that all damage and flooding caused by the last hurricanes have already been repaired, and the island’s beaches are back to clean and pristine.
If you’re looking for unique activities to do in Holbox while the crowds are away, we recommend taking a kayaking tour at night when the luminous coral reefs glow bright blue, cycling through the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, or Holbox Village to explore and the many friendly restaurants.
