Looking for an idyllic escape that won’t break the bank? Spain has you covered.

Startups has just revealed the top 8 Spanish destinations for digital nomads this winter, but one clearly stood out from the rest in terms of savings.

One of the most common concerns remote workers have before fully diving into digital nomads is how to manage their expenses, and rightly so.

Packing for life on the road is a big undertaking no matter the season, but this lesser-known seaside town ticks all the boxes, especially when it comes to winter sun and huge savings.

Spain is already one of Europe’s most popular destinations for the ever-so-popular digital nomad lifestyle, but it’s time to shine a light on it Almeriaone of Spain’s last remaining hidden gems along the country’s beautiful coastlines.

Almeria is best discovered in winter

when Almeria is famous, it is summer. The bad side is that it can be absolutely scorching hot, so digital nomads may not want to waste their visa stay days in the heat of summer.

However, that’s all the more reason to spend your days at the beach instead of in the snoozefest of Zoom meetings.

The good news is that you can have a much better work-life balance in the winter, when the temperatures are much nicer, in the 60s and with a nice sea breeze.

Located in the south-east of Spain, with the nearest major city being Seville, this prime property to call home, whether seeking the full year of the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa or attempting to extend it for the full five year you get.

But know the perks you get if you come in winter: fewer locals staying here, beautiful weather, and more affordable stays with off-season rates.

Beyond the beach weather: why Almeria is attractive to digital nomads

Despite flying under the radar, Almeria is a beautiful place that is definitely worth a visit. It is not only a beautiful beach destination, but also a culturally rich city.

So much so that it has been a Hollywood set for classics like The good, the bad and the ugly and newer fan favorites such as Game of Thrones.

Steeped in history, the roots of Islamic tradition and Moorish heritage are present, and unlike some of Spain’s tourism titans, given such a mix, Almeria is a welcoming community.

While certainly not on par with Madrid’s, Almeria’s digital nomad scene has seen steady growth.

Its picture-postcard beaches, cozy cafes and plentiful co-working spaces make it a great place to work and relax, with the latter being on the cheaper side.

For example, Contenido Creativo only costs about $100 a month to work here as you please, or you can grab a cappuccino for less than $3 at a local cafe, such as centrally located Artisanal coffee.

But that’s just a superficial comment. You have enough money to spend, because the rent doesn’t get any cheaper!

Startups report that apartments can be found as low as $540 per month. I did my own research and found that Airbnb also offers serviced apartments for a little more, ranging from $600 to over $1,100 this winter.

Where to spend your free time in Almeria

Despite being relatively small, there are plenty of ways to spend your days, between uncovering the region’s fascinating history, visiting picture-postcard beaches or simply people-watching from one of the many outdoor cafes.

One of those sights not to be missed is the Conjunto Monumental de la Alcazaba de Almería, a huge Moorish fortress dating back to 955 AD.

But honestly, the beaches here are too beautiful to pass up, and this is probably where you’ll spend most of your free time in various ways.

One of the most popular places for sun and sand is Monsul Beachwith towering cliffs and crystal clear waters.

Behind it (but not far) is Playa de los Genoveses, located within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park for an idyllic setting, away from the “action” of the city.

Here in the park, after a stressful day at work, you can also enjoy scenic walks or hearty local cuisine in a seaside restaurant, or discover your adventurous side by kayaking or diving in pristine waters.
