If you’re looking for a truly unique place, the US is home to a city that is truly incomparable.
Showcasing European flair through art and architecture while welcoming guests with quintessential Southern hospitality, The Bayou is calling your name this winter.
While travelers like to collect passport stamps, USA today claims that the ultimate destination to experience the European atmosphere without the fear of long-haul flights is none other than the shining star of Louisiana.
With some of the best cuisines and major hotels in the United States, you’re sure to enjoy the finer things in life as you explore New Orleans for winter sun, incredible culture and a surprisingly chic side of the city that ignores the mainstream news.
The ultimate cultural escape from the South
If you’ve visited Louisiana, much of the state feels surreal. But nestled among the vast swamplands lies one of America’s most cultural cities, and honestly, it all too often gets a bad wrap.
Certain parts of New Orleans are off-limits to tourists, but these crime-ridden neighborhoods do not represent the city as a whole.
New Orleans is bustling with life, from street performers day and night to vibrant architecture and the world-famous Bourbon Street.
It’s also home to such a diverse community, where you can notice a distinct accent that’s unlike any other American city. and home to some special oddities, such as the very popular voodoo shops.
Many of the streets of New Orleans date back to the 18th century, with both French and Spanish influences, and are well-preserved time capsules, which are very inviting despite the dramatic reporting over the years.
Don’t hesitate to dance in the streets with the locals, enjoy a hearty Cajun meal or visit one of the many museums to learn more about this diamond in the rough.
And know that Mardi Gras is not the only time to visit this fantastic city. Downtown is the heartbeat of the city and never stops beating.
The enchanting French Quarter
Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the “coolest neighborhood in the world,” which happens to be in France.
Having also been to New Orleans’ famous French Quarter, it certainly deserves more hype, but it probably didn’t make the cut simply because it’s so well known, unlike Notre-Dame-du-Mont in Marseille.
I can confirm that it is one of the coolest neighborhoods I have personally been to, and it truly feels like you are walking the charming streets of Europe (at least until you notice a whiff of gumbo).
There is certainly no place in the city that is more photo-worthy and one of the best choices for a wonderful stay in a chic hotel or a trendy boutique stay.
The streets are lined with colorful buildings that many believe are hundreds of years old.
It’s a great balance of old and new as you can hear the soundtrack of New Orleans permeating these historic blocks and some fantastic restaurants dotted around the area.
Moreover, you must visit Jackson Square. Here is the epicenter of the French Quarter, and yes, it is touristy, but don’t let that stop you.
It’s truly a sight to behold, with St. Louis Cathedral stealing the spotlight from gimmicky attractions and overhyped restaurants like Cafe du Monde.
Restaurant tip: If you want the best chicken wings of your life, eat in Chicken & Watermelon, a no-nonsense store with more than 20 flavors at affordable prices. It’s a must visit every time I’m in New Orleans.
N‘Awlins‘ Glamorous side: stay in luxury in numerous luxury hotels
Although winter is an excellent time to visit this fantastic city, with temperatures consistently in the 60s, and enjoy scenic walks through its enchanting streets, no one can blame you for staying in your posh pub!
New Orleans often has a reputation for being dirty, and to be honest, after a wild weekend on Bourbon Street, you might want to avoid this area on a Monday morning.
But like many modern-day news outlets, you can’t believe everything you hear.
The city makes for a great winter getaway, largely due to its affordable luxury aspect. We are biased Windsor Courtthe winner of the Top Hotels 2024 for our own Travel Off Path Best In Travel awards.
But there are countless luxury hotels to choose from. Here are 5 of the best big hotels you can book this winter TripAdvisor:
- Hotel Monteléone
- The Royal Sonesta New Orleans
- Le Méridien New Orleans
- Hotel Saint Vincent
- Omni Royal Orleans
Hotel recommendation: While not necessarily ‘luxurious’, I loved staying at what used to be the Olde Town Inn (now renamed Mardi Gras Inn) near the French Quarter. Great for budget travelers and offers a homely atmosphere unlike sky-high hotels.
