Europe is like a magnet for Americans, especially in the summer months when it can feel like there are more American tourists than locals in some hotspots.
And it’s easy to understand why. Europe crams so many cultures, cuisines and historical sites into a relatively small geographic space that it’s the perfect playground for travelers.
But informed travelers avoid the crowds and heat of Europe in the summer and instead visit the country during the winter months.
The atmosphere is different, the atmosphere more relaxed, and I dare say tourists are also welcomed more warmly.
So where are they going? According to research by Allianz, these are the top 5 most popular European destinations for American travelers this winter:
5. Dublin, Ireland
Dublin’s popularity as a winter holiday destination has exploded this year, rising to 5e most popular destination compared to last year’s seventh place.
If you’ve always dreamed of cozying up by the roaring fire of a traditional Irish pub, winter is the perfect time to do it.
And although the weather can be a bit gloomy, the longer nights and shorter days make Dublin’s nightlife exceptional in the winter months. For example, St. Patrick’s Cathedral hosts live music and performances throughout November 3Olympia Theater dedicates itself to comedy in January.
If you’re looking for a bit of festive cheer, Dublin Zoo is hosting its famous Wild Lights Nights from October 24 to January 5.
This is a spectacular exhibition of illuminated installations that you can enjoy as you move between the zoo’s enclosures. Entrance fees 24.50 euros ($26) per person.
4. Rome, Italy
The Eternal City is one of the most popular cities in Europe during the summer months, with local authorities even introducing a ticket system to visit the Trevi Fountain in an attempt to control the crowds.
But in winter the crowds disappear and you can explore this living museum at your leisure. The temperatures are mild and there are also plenty of sunny days.
The culture, architecture and cuisine that the city is famous for are just as enjoyable in winter as they are in summer – perhaps even more so. But the winter months also have their own unique charm.
Between December and February you can visit Grinzing Village in Piazza Adriana and skate outside with a festive feeling. You don’t need to book in advance, you can just show up!
On January 5 and 6, the Romans celebrate the legend of Befana, the witch who brings gifts. This is a great time to be in the city as there is carnival and a parade of over 100 people dressed in period costume.
3. Madrid, Spain
Madrid is one of the best Spanish cities to visit in winter. Fresh, with fresh air and clear blue skies, you can replenish your vitamin D and explore this fascinating hotspot.
In November and December, Madrid hosts Christmas markets, pop-up ice rinks and ornate nativity scenes.
Don’t miss the Christmas market in Plaza Mayor, which has been attracting visitors since the 17th century.
If you want to escape the cold or the rain, head to the Prado Museum. One of the most fascinating galleries in Europe for art lovers, you can find pieces by Goya, Velázquez and El Greco here. From October 15 to February 6 there will be a special exhibition dedicated to Reubens’ work.
General admission fees 15 euros ($16) per person.
2. Paris, France
If you want to visit Paris without spending a lot of money, winter is the best time to choose. Hotel prices are dropping significantly.
The weather is cold and often wet, but the city is still charming and the number of visitors is also much lower.
From November onwards, the city is sprinkled with Christmas trees, lights and decorations. On rainy days, take the opportunity to explore the art at the Louvre or the Palace of Versailles.
If you like shopping, visit Les Soldes in January. My favorite time to be in Paris! Unlike the US or UK where stores seem to have permanent sales, in France there are only 2 official sales periods. The first of these runs from January 10 to February 6 and is a great time to score a bargain!
1. London, England
It should come as no surprise that London is the most popular European destination for American travelers this winter.
London was also the most popular European destination for American travelers last winter!
I’ve said before that winter is my favorite time of year to visit London. The incredible light shows, festive atmosphere and chill in the air all make for an amazing experience.
Some of the best things to do in London in winter include visiting the museums and galleries, wandering around the South Bank to see the lights, and for a taste of Christmas, visit the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. This is open from November 21 to January 5 entrance tickets cost from £5 ($6) with additional costs for activities such as ice skating.
For traditional Christmas dishes, take a stroll to Borough Market. This is London’s oldest and largest food market, and although it has a reputation for being overrun with tourists (especially in summer), the quality of the food here is excellent.
Like Dublin, London is a great place to sit in a pub with a pint in winter. Try the Grazing Goat in Marylebone or The Anglesea Arms at Ravenscourt Park. This has open paneling and a roaring fire, creating an authentic British pub feel.
