Have you had enough of the bad weather and the endless advertising for Christmas consumerism?
Me, too! That’s why there’s no better time to plan ahead for your 2025 vacations.
It’s not always easy to get off the beaten track, especially if you don’t know where to go. You need inspiration.
So, even if it sounds like a contradiction in terms, why not follow the crowd to lesser-known places that are just emerging?
According to Skyscanner research, these are the five global destinations that saw the biggest increase in search data over the past twelve months.
5. Portsmouth, Dominica
If you’re dreaming of soaking up the Caribbean sun, Portsmouth on the island of Dominica is the fastest growing destination in the Caribbean right now.
Portsmouth is a small but charming city (on the coast of a small but charming island) and is best known for its outstanding natural beauty.
If your idea of the perfect tropical vacation includes beaches, waterfalls and breathtaking national parks, then this is the place to be.
Some of the main attractions in Portsmouth include the Syndicate Falls and Cabrits National Park.
The Cabrits National Park is no ordinary national park. It includes not only the tropical rainforest you would expect, but also wetlands and even a protected coral reef.
There are also the ruins of an 18e century military fort and an abundance of lizards call this place home. Admission costs $5.00 per person per day.
4. Baltimore, USA
You don’t have to travel far to visit one of the world’s fastest growing destinations: number 4 on the Skyscanner list is right here in the US.
There has been an incredible 217% increase in searches for visitors to Baltimore.
Baltimore is a fascinating port city that attracts many people because it has something to offer to every type of traveler.
Downtown Baltimore is relatively compact, making it refreshingly walkable. Attractions such as the Maryland Science Center, the National Aquarium, and the American Visionary Arts Museum are all in one location.
One of the most popular attractions in Baltimore is exploring Fort McHenry. This will appeal to history buffs and patriots alike, as this is the place where the Star Spangled Banner was put together.
Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine offers self-guided tours, and in addition to exploring the fort itself, you can also enjoy nature trails here. Admission costs $15 per person.
3. Siem Reap, Cambodia
Siem Reap is the second largest city in Cambodia, but often does not get the attention it deserves. By far the biggest attraction in Siem Reap is the iconic Angkor Wat temple, and it attracts visitors from all over the world.
But there are many more reasons to explore Siem Reap beyond the Angkor Archaeological Park. Visit the city’s lively and vibrant street markets for both delicious street food and affordable souvenirs.
And if you want to be entertained and fully immerse yourself in Cambodian culture at the same time, visit Phare – The Cambodian Circus.
This is more than an ordinary circus. It also shares local folklore and is performed by underprivileged students living in the city.
Tickets from $18 per person.
2. Tartu, Estonia
Estonia was not on the travel radar until recently when the capital Tallinn was declared European Capital of Culture this year.
But if you want to get off the beaten track in this breathtakingly beautiful country, then you should visit the city of Tartu instead.
Tartu has a beautiful old town and is home to one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe. The Estonian National Museum is also located in the city. If you’re looking for incredible architecture and fascinating ruins, there are few better places.
But that doesn’t mean Tartu is grand or stuffy. In fact, the city has a relaxed and youthful appearance with a renowned nightlife. And it’s convenient too. Being a compact city, most of Tartu’s bars, restaurants and nightclubs are located on two parallel streets.
If you want to party all night, try Maasikas Night Club. For a more pleasant and relaxed evening Atso bar is known for its great drinks and effortlessly cool atmosphere.
1. Reggio Calabria, Italy
Italy is a perennial favorite for American travelers looking to explore Europe, but as a result, its biggest well-known destinations like Rome, Venice and the Amalfi Coast are uncomfortably crowded with tourists.
Entering Reggio Calabria. Located on the southern coast of Italy, opposite Sicily, this is the tip of the toe of the Italian boot!
Reggio Calabria is a breathtakingly beautiful destination and much less visited than many of Italy’s other hotspots. At least for now.
New flight routes to Calabria have led to an increase in interest in the region. So visit now before the large numbers follow!
Some of the main attractions of Reggio Calabria are its beaches, harbor and breathtaking sea views. From the coast you have a clear view of the region’s famous volcano, Mount Etna.
But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that Reggio Calabria has many unique cultural attractions.
The Archaeological Museum here is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. It is spread over 4 floors and contains finds from prehistoric times to Roman times. Tickets cost 10 euros ($11) per person.
