Have you ever taken a step back and thought how crazy it is that we can fly just about anywhere?
Somehow we have normalized and taken for granted the power of flight and how wonderful it is to soar above the clouds without any problems.
Well, mostly…
A rare incident occurred this week. That won’t just be the case 44 new flight routes launched by the popular budget airline, Allegiantbut one of them is a recently opened airport serving the public for the first time ever.
This popular beach holiday in the south has been behind the times for far too long, where travelers had to Ask Jeeves or Siri how to get here for decades.
But now Gulf Shores, AL Starts fresh with a bang, serve 6 new flight routes from Gulf Shores International Airport (GUF), right out of the gate.
Say goodbye to long road trips
Road trips are fun and all, but they take up so much of your actual vacation time. Wouldn’t it be more convenient to fly, especially if you know you’re flying with a budget airline with low fares?
Allegiant has taken notice and prides itself on being a game-changer for both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, two southern staples for paradise beach vacations.
According to Gulf Shores Newsthis has been a long time coming and there’s a bright future ahead for Allegiant’s latest point on their roadmap.
As someone who grew up in Texas, Gulf Shores was put on a pedestal as the best beach within reach. Unfortunately, this range was typically at least 8 hours depending on where you lived.
But it’s not just Texas residents who like to flock to the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores to cool off in the summer or stay warm in the winter; you could say this is most of the south.
Allegiant has also taken this into account with some calculated additions to their flight network, making it easy to trade popular road trip routes for convenient, affordable flights.
What’s so great about Gulf Shores?
Say the name “Alabama” and you might get some funny looks telling you it’s a vacation destination, but those watching you have apparently never been to Gulf Shores, the state’s golden child.
This beautiful seaside town has grown over the years from a local secret to southern stardom with soft, white sand, warm emerald green water and luxurious beach stays (often at great prices!) like the
The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel.
This includes neighboring Orange Beach, an excellent alternative when the hustle and bustle of the Gulf Shores is overwhelming in the summer.
Home to delicious seafood, ample water activities such as snorkeling, jet skiing and kayaking, and even a deep dive into history with locations like Fort Morganthere is something for everyone here.
Despite the playful nickname “Redneck Riviera,” this region is the place to visit where southern hospitality meets coastal paradise, which you might think the same for Florida.
If so, check out the new show It’s Florida, man streaming on Max and that will definitely change your perspective.
The very first commercial flights from Gulf Shore
As mentioned, Gulf Shores plays a small role in Allegiant’s major expansion, but this popular beach paradise will certainly have the biggest impact.
Allegiant will serve as the first-ever airline for GUF with the following six routes will be launched in May 2025:
- Knoxville, Tenn. (TYS) – as of May 21, 2025
- Cincinnati, Ohio (CVG) – as of May 22, 2025

- Belleville, Illinois (BLV) – as of May 23, 2025
- Kansas City, Missouri (MCI) – as of May 24, 2025
Both Uber and Lyft both operate in Gulf Shores, but there is no word yet on the implementation of rideshare services at GUF.
Tickets for all new routes can be booked through the Allegiant app or website.
