Are you planning to head to Mexico for a sunny getaway this winter, but can’t seem to shake your lingering safety concerns?
You should know that our southern neighbor is generally a relatively safe tourist destination, but even in places like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta certain precautions must be taken:
Sticking to well-defined tourist zones, not displaying valuables in public, or avoiding suburban areas are just some of the measures tourists can take to ensure they have a worry-free experience in Mexico.
That said, there are a handful of Mexican destinations that are much more peaceful than your average resort hotspot, and where safety levels are low. even higher––so high that we would be surprised if a tourist were ever robbed or witnessed violence.
Including one of the lowest risk destinations south of the border, here they are 4 of the least dangerous beach resorts in Mexico for consideration:
Isla Mujeres
Located just off the coast of bustling Cancun, Isla Mujeres is the quieter, more peaceful alternative to a select number of hotels, sleepy seaside settlements surrounded by turquoise waters, and pristine white sandy beaches that remain sargassum-free all year round.
Playa Norte, located on the northern tip of the island, has been voted time and time again as the most beautiful beach in the Mexican Caribbean, and the landmark Impression Isla Mujeres from Secrets was crowned ‘Most Instagrammable Hotel’ in the world this year.
Aside from its breathtaking coastal scenery and incredible resorts, Isla Mujeres boasts one of the highest levels of security in the region, with low crime rates and virtually non-existent violence, especially in the areas frequented by tourists. it’s just a natural oasisnot a gang hotspot.
Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido, along the honey-colored sands of southern Oaxaca, is, as its name implies, a ‘hidden’ beach town spread throughout the Pacific Ocean, where locals and visitors alike enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle compared to the busy Mexican Caribbean.
It stands out for its well-established backpacker scene, with numerous youth hostels and B&Bs right on the coastline, its surf culture and the wide Principal Beach, lined with tall palm trees and traditional, rustic bars.
The best part? Tourists are not at serious risk of becoming victims of or witnessing violent acts in Puerto Escondido: as in the broader state of Oaxaca, it is considered a Level 2 destinationThis means that caution is advised, especially due to pickpocketing, but personal integrity is not a major problem.
Progress
Progreso is just a 40-minute drive from the colonial treasure of Merida an emerging leisure destination located on the Gulf of Mexico, home to beachfront Malecón and thatched-roof beach restaurants.
Lacking the staggering overdevelopment of Cancun, Playa Progreso is one of them the most pristine of the Yucatán Peninsulawith pristine sandy beaches and a picture-perfect palapa stretching into aquamarine waters, and on weekdays it almost feels like a private beach.
Whether you’re relaxing on the coast, walking through the city center or going out for dinner in the evening, you don’t have to constantly look over your shoulder: the US authorities are taking Progreso into account, as well as the whole of Yucatán standsa level 1 destination with low risk and minimal crime.
Cape San Lucas
The most luxurious of all Mexican beach resorts, Cabo San Lucas has the tight security and high surveillance to back it up, with a heavily guarded resort strip protected from the gangs of Baja California and not a single major incident involving tourists over more than a year.
You mainly come there to relax, pamper yourself and be close to nature. Here you’ll find several of Mexico’s top-rated hotels, including the Grand Velas Los Cabos, whose luxury eatery Cocina de Autor received the MICHELIN quality mark.
Cabo was also voted on recently one of the safest destinations in Mexicowith 24.8% of the population feeling unsafe in their place of residence, compared to a much larger 75.2% who do not––in terms of safety it ranks just below Merida.
