Agnes Keleti, the world’s oldest living Olympic gold medalist, has died at the age of 103. Keleti, a Holocaust survivor and five-time Olympic champion, made history in 1952 when she won her first gold medal at the Helsinki Games at the age of 19. 31. She went on to win four more gold medals at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, cementing her place as the oldest female gymnast to ever win Olympic gold. With a total of ten Olympic medals, including five golds, Keleti became Hungary’s second most successful athlete of all time.
Keleti was born in Budapest in 1921 and her early athletics career was interrupted when she was banned from playing sports due to her Jewish heritage. She survived the Holocaust by hiding in a village with false papers, while many of her relatives, including her father, died in Auschwitz. After the 1956 Games, Keleti moved to Israel, where she married, had two children and continued her gymnastics career as a coach. Keleti died on Thursday at the Budapest Military Hospital, where she was treated for heart failure and breathing difficulties. She was just days away from her 104th birthday.
