It wasn’t long after celebrities arrived on the red carpet at the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday that one of the biggest fashion trends of the night came into focus: metallics. Those who wore them included Zendaya, who wore a coppery orange Louis Vuitton dress; Angelina Jolie, who opted for a silver Alexander McQueen dress; and Cate Blanchett, who donned a gold ensemble, also from Vuitton, that she had previously worn in Cannes and that made her glitter like a statuette.
The many shimmering ensembles added sparkle to a carpet that was also full of color, from pale pink Dior (on Anya Taylor-Joy); to Navy Carolina Herrera (on Kate Hudson); to red Dolce & Gabbana (on Dakota Fanning). Since it was an awards ceremony, there was also a lot of black, especially long black gloves that added a bygone touch to the finery.
With some of the biggest stars from television and film in attendance, there was no shortage of fabulous and flamboyant formal wear. These 19 looks, for good and bad reasons, were among the most memorable.
Pamela Anderson: Most natural!
The actress and star of ‘The Last Showgirl’ continued to forego heavy makeup and instead sported a nearly bare face with her black Oscar de la Renta dress.
Nicole Kidman: The Most Space Age!
The “Babygirl” actress’ combination of a modern, bouffant hairstyle and a sparkling, silver Balenciaga one-shoulder dress evoked the glamor of “Jetsons.”
Timothée Chalamet: Most Dylan!
The mustachioed star of “A Complete Unknown” still dresses up as Bob Dylan. Instead of a tie, he accessorized his sparkling Tom Ford suit with a folksy blue scarf.
Michelle Yeoh: Witchiest!
The skirt of the ‘Wicked’ actress’ Balenciaga dress flared dramatically at the bottom, creating a silhouette that resembled that of a broom.
Mikey Madison: Most goldfish!
In a Bottega Veneta dress covered in gold enamel sequins, the ‘Anora’ star looked like a 24-carat sea creature.
Demi Moore: Most Sculpted!
The actress and star of ‘The Substance’ opted for an Armani Privé dress with a sculptural bodice that exposed her toned physique.
Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande: Most Curveball!
After months of appearing in green and pink, the “Wicked” actresses defied expectations by opting for neutral looks: Ms. Erivo wore a black and silver lace dress from Louis Vuitton, and Ms. Grande opted for an archive Givenchy dress from the couture collection from the spring 1966 label.
Colman Domingo: Most flirty!
The ‘Sing Sing’ actor seems to be feeling the trend known as coquette, which involves a liberal use of bows. His Valentino tuxedo was accessorized with a scarf tied in an oversized bow, as well as dress shoes adorned with bows.
Karla Sofía Gascón: The most vitamin C!
The winter citrus season in California came to mind when I saw the actress “Emilia Pérez” in her draped yellow-orange Saint Laurent number. She said she chose the palette to remind viewers that light triumphs over darkness.
Kerry Washington: most cocooned!
The ruffles made it look like the actress was wrapped in the Pepto Bismol pink fabric of her Balenciaga dress.
Jeremy Strong: Most Gumby!
Wearing a soft green Loro Piana suit and matching bucket hat, the actor, a star of “The Apprentice,” recalled a certain clay cartoon character.
Viola Davis: the most disco!
The actress conjured up visions of party streamers and dance floors in her sequined Gucci dress, a reworked version of a dress she wore to a recent gala.
The singer looked both sharp and elegant in a Celine dress with rhinestone accents, which showed off her many tattoos.
Glen Powell: Most Tom Cruise!
The “Hit Man” and “Twisters” actor bore an uncanny resemblance to his “Top Gun: Maverick” co-star with his aviator glasses, unbuttoned Armani shirt and sly grin.
Anna Sawai: Most risky!
By opting for a white bustier and skirt from Dior, the ‘Shogun’ actress took a fashion risk at an awards ceremony known for serving food – and red wine.
Tilda Swinton: Most Tilda!
The actress, a star of “The Room Next Door,” tempered the stuffiness of her two-piece Chanel look with electric powder pink lipstick and an ’80s new wave hairstyle.
Emma Stone: most shaved!
More notable than the actress’s Louis Vuitton dress was her new pixie-style hairdo, a dramatic hairstyle that some speculated could be related to her role in an upcoming film from Yorgos Lanthimos, who will celebrate her Oscar-winning performance in ‘Poor Things ‘ directed.
Melissa McCarthy: Most peonies!
Seen from behind, the actress’s voluminous pink Christian Siriano ensemble, with its myriad pink ruffles, resembled a peony in full bloom.
