Recent tragedies emphasize beach dangers

Unfortunately, the beautiful beaches of Cancun have recently been the location of various dangerous incidents. During a busy holiday period, the civil protection authorities reported three successful water rescue, but unfortunately they also had to reclaim the bodies of two people. The head of Benito Juárez Civil Protection, Antonio Riveroll Ribbón, stated that the majority of these events concerned people who did not follow official safety recommendations.

A deeply unhappy incident took place on a Friday night in Playa Gaviota Azul in the hotel zone. A 38-year-old local man went into the water while his wife was on the beach. He was overcome by a strong stream and moved to the sea. Despite immediate efforts for salvation and resuscitation, he could not be revived.

Only a few days later, on Sunday evening near Playa Chac Mool, a dangerous situation developed. A few – a woman from Michoacán and a man from the United States – entered the sea together. They did this despite strong waves, placed warnings and the fact that the port had been closed since Saturday due to the dangerous circumstances. Crucial, they chose to swim in an area without a lifeguard. A nearby bystander saw them in need and acted quickly and managed to save the woman. Tragic enough, however, he was unable to save the man.

Ignoring warnings leads to risk

What is the common link in these disturbing events? According to Antonio Riveroll RibbónA primary factor is swimmers who do not follow the instructions of lifeguards and ignore the warning flags on the beaches. He noted that some visitors unfortunately get irritated when lifeguards advise them not to enter the water due to unsafe conditions, as large waves indicated by red flags.

Allegedly, in response to these warnings, some people subsequently left guided beach sections to swim in non -controlled areas. “Unfortunately when people go to public beaches and the lifeguard gives them a warning, they get upset and look for them without supervision,” explained Mr Riveroll Ribbón. He strongly insists on all the swimmers to respect the lifeguards and to pay careful attention to the flag system. Entering the water in non -controlled areas, especially when the circumstances are rough, is a very serious risk.

Understand beach flags and circumstances

It is vital for every visitor to understand the beach warning system. These colored flags offer essential, easy to understand information about current sea conditions.

  • Double red flags: mean that the ocean is closed to the public due to extremely dangerous circumstances
  • Red flag: It is generally not recommended for swimming when a red flag is posted. This means that the circumstances are dangerous due to strong currents, high surfs or other hazards. Beaches known for larger waves, such as Chac Mool, Delfines and Ballenas, have recently shown red flags.
  • Yellow flag: This gives carefully. Conditions can include moderate surf or currents. Swimming is allowed, but you must be careful and aware. If you are not a strong swimmer, it is best to stay close to the coast or perhaps prevent you from entering the water. Beaches such as Playa del Niño, Las Perlas, Langosta, Tortugas and Caracol recently showed yellow flags.
  • Green flag: The circumstances are generally calm and swimming is considered safe. However, you must always remain aware of your environment.

It is also good to know that the Yucatan peninsula often experiences strong wind, especially during the spring. These winds can create powerful waves and currents along the Cancun coast and the circumstances can change quickly.

Staying safe on the beaches of Cancun: Essential tips for travelers

The beaches of Cancun offer a great experience, and swimming in the Caribbean Sea is a great attraction. Keep these important tips in mind to enjoy it safely:

  1. Latvian instructions in Achten: They are trained professionals focused on your safety. Always follow their instructions.
  2. Note flags: Always check the flag color before you go close to the water. Never enter the water under a red flag. Understand that yellow means caution.
  3. Swim in guided zones: Stay in areas where lifeguards have active service. Avoid swimming in external places without supervision.
  4. Know your swimming boundaries: Be honest about your swimming options. Ocean conditions differ from swimming pools. Don’t push yourself too hard.
  5. Understand RIP streams: These are strong, narrow water channels that leave the coast. If you are caught, stay calm. Do not swim against it immediately. Swim parallel to the coast until you are free from the current and then swim back to the beach.
  6. Use the Buddy system: Never swim alone. Join someone and watch out for each other.
  7. Avoid alcohol before swimming: Alcohol hinders judgment and physical skills. Keep swimming and drinking separately.
  8. Rating conditions: Look at the waves and wind before entering the water. If it looks rough, you must be careful or stay away.
