We’ve all seen the bumper stickers that say, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”
But is that really true?
Well, we at Travel Off Path searched the map to find out for ourselves.
That said, I am admittedly a travel nut.
I’ve been to Moldova before Paris, Cuba before Punta Cana, and pretty much every “hidden gem” south of the border before finally visiting Cancun for the first time in 2025.

While I personally embrace my freakdom, many travelers prefer a rinse-and-repeat vacation, following the crowd as if it’s the only option on the table.
But we like to live up to our name and make good use of the ‘Off Path’ part.
That’s why we believe these five almost unheard of countries will offer the biggest surprises as they all finally embrace tourism in 2026.
Angola: Africa’s next beach and safari hotspot 🇦🇴

Africa is a bucket list destination through and through, from the epic beaches of Cape Town to witnessing gorillas in Rwanda.
Although, Angola?
That’s not exactly a household name, despite its appeal as a nature destination for wild safaris and surprisingly beautiful beaches outside the bustling capital Luanda.
Angola is currently in a marketing rift, promote his country as the biggest surprise in Africa.
The government has poured more than half a billion dollars (yes, with a ‘B’) into campaigns in the hopes of driving more tourists out of Kenya, South Africa and other notable countries.

With postcard natural wonders such as Kalandula Waterfalls or tribal excursions to spend a day immersed in local traditions as if you were in Nat Geo, Angola will want to be at the top of your list for your next adventure.
Western Sahara: the new ‘Morocco’ 🇪🇭
Here’s one we’ve discussed in the past, and not to toot our own horn, it turns out we were right.
Politically, Western Sahara is one of those places whose status remains up for debate: is it an independent country or effectively an extension of Morocco?

We’ll leave that up to you, but the latest news is that Morocco has claimed victory and asserted sovereignty over this remote stretch of desolate desert, dotted with cultural villages and an incredible coastline.
As such, heavy investments have been made to bring Western Sahara to life as a bona fide holiday destination with an emphasis on new roads, ports and the most notable resorts, such as Dakhla pose.
As the windsurfing capital of the world, it already had some fame when we last hosted a feature and has only doubled since then to become your next exciting escape just a stone’s throw from some of Spain’s most popular islands.

East Timor: the next “Bali” 🇹🇱
If there’s one Asian powerhouse with a mixed bag of reviews, it’s Bali.
Long ago are the Eat pray love days and full speed ahead is heavy traffic, high prices and declining authenticity.
The neighboring country that no one talks about is East Timor, one of the newest formed countries in the world.
Don’t just take it from us: Popular YouTubers with six figures and more followers are starting to wonder which is the big one Dili is, like Stamp on tour And Best Food Review Show Ever.

This under-the-radar nation and still-developing capital, Dili, is one of the least visited on Earth. In fact, North Korea receives more tourists every year.
Right now, the country is still raw and feels like Bali before it became a bucket list destination.
With a pristine coastline, winding open roads perfect for the dreamy Southeast Asia motorcycle ride you’ve always envisioned, and hospitable locals far removed from the chaos that Bali has become today, Timor-Leste is ready to embrace tourism by launching new flights, hosting festivals and even a marathon.

Turkmenistan: the world’s most bizarre country wants you to visit 🇹🇲

The “Stans” aren’t just a crazy group of Eminem fans. In terms of travel, they are often an overlooked group of neighboring countries that many consider too far away to visit.
While fellow ‘stan’ Uzbekistan is all the rage on social media for its meticulously detailed palaces and inviting culture, Turkmenistan is at the other end of the spectrum and is, quite frankly, known for being downright bizarre with eerily quiet streets and ghost town feels, despite its sprawling urban sprawl.
As my ex told me when I let her go, notoriously tense Turkmenistan says they are ready to change.
The first step was to issue a new travel friendly one e-visa policy.
The second step was to reverse course by deciding not to close their most sought after attraction, the Gate to hella fiery crater in the middle of the Karakum Desert that has burned continuously for more than 50 years.

- Entry Requirements: Visa required for US tourists
- Affordability: Luxury hotels cost upwards of $100, a nice dinner for two costs just $30
- Safety: Currently designated as ‘Level 1’
Bangladesh: the holiday destination you never knew existed 🇧🇩
If you’ve been down the street rabbit hole on TikTok, chances are your students have doubled in size when they see what’s being served up on the streets of Dhaka.
The chaotic capital of Bangladesh is not what the country promotes.
They want more travelers to explore their coastline, places like Cox’s Bazar.
Security forces, lifeguards and cleaning crews are present here is added to make this surprising slice of paradise feel like the kind of beach destination travelers actually daydream about, hoping to catch the attention of thrill-seekers looking for a new passport stamp.

Cox’s Bazar in itself is everything “Dhaka on the beach”. They are wide sandy beaches, jet ski rentals and cheap resorts such as Sayeman Beach really proves that Bangladesh has a legit beach destination worth bragging about.
