Mazatlan (Sinaloa)
The Vibe: the “colonial city on the beach”
This is without a doubt the most unique destination on this list. Why? Because it is the only major beach town in Mexico that is also a real, 19th century historic town. While other cities built their tourist zones miles away from their authentic centers, Mazatlan is breathtaking Centro Historico is just a short five minute walk from the beach. You can spend your morning walking past colorful, restored colonial mansions and your afternoon on the lively Malecon.
Although an extremely popular destination for Mexican nationals in the summer, US tourism is still surprisingly low in the winter, which has allowed Mazatlan to retain its incredible, authentic charm. for now. You can get a world-class shrimp dinner here for a fraction of what you would pay in Cabo.
Now let’s discuss the elephant in the room: the travel advice. Yes, Mazatlán is located in the state of Sinaloa, which has the U.S. Department of State Warning “Level 4: Do not travel”.. This is serious advice, but it is mainly aimed at crime in other parts of the state, not at the heavily guarded tourist zones of the Centro Histórico and the ‘Golden Zone’. To put it into perspective, our own CEO, who has visited more than 100 countries, has lived full-time in Mazatlán for the past six years.
Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca)

For decades this was a cash-only secret for backpackers and surfers on Oaxaca’s rugged coast. Well, the secret is out. ‘Puerto’ is the ‘new Tulum’: it has the same trendy, boho-chic energy, but is still really affordable, authentic and hasn’t lost its soul yet.
It’s a perfect mix of worlds. You have the legendary Zicatela Beacha world-class surfing holiday with an energetic strip of beach bars and restaurants. And just a 10-minute taxi ride away you will find the beautiful bay with turquoise water Playa Carrizalilloone of the most beautiful and swimmable beaches in all of Mexico. Huatulco (Oaxaca)
The Vibe: the “eco-friendly gem with 9 bays”
If Puerto Escondido is the “cool kid,” Huatulco is its relaxed, sophisticated older sibling. This isn’t a sprawling, chaotic mega-resort city; it is a stunning, eco-friendly development built around it nine pristine, individual bays. More than two-thirds of the area is a protected national park, which means the beaches are cleaner, the water is stunningly crystal clear and the atmosphere is much more relaxing.
Because it was built specifically for tourism, it is incredibly safe and clean, but never feels artificial. It’s the perfect “off-path” choice for families or couples who want a luxurious, relaxing vacation without the party atmosphere of other beach towns.
La Paz (Baja California Sur)
The Vibe: the “Anti-Cabo” and gateway to Mexico’s best beach
While Cabo San Lucas (just two hours south) is overrun with crowds and high prices, savvy travelers head to La Paz. This is the authentic, relaxed capital of Baja California Sur and a true paradise for nature lovers. It’s a ‘work town’ with a beautiful waterfront Malecon, a world-class food scene, and zero chaos during spring break.
The real reason you come here? La Paz is the gateway to Balandra Beacha protected turquoise lagoon that is consistently and rightly called the most beautiful beach in all of Mexico. El Cuyo (Yucatan)

Do you remember when you first heard about Holbox? Before the golf cart traffic jams and the $300 a night hotels? That’s El Cuyo now. This small, remote fishing and kitesurfing village on the border of Yucatan and Quintana Roo is the definition of an ‘off-path’ discovery.
With unpaved dirt roads, a handful of boho-chic guesthouses, and zero major resortsthis is where you go to really disconnect. It is a 2.5 hour drive from Cancun, and that has protected it. This is a real gem before it’s popular. Loreto is a small, charming and incredibly safe historic town on the Sea of Cortez, backed by the beautiful mountains of the Sierra de la Giganta. It’s the opposite of Cabo: quiet, historic and built around a beautiful 17th century mission, not a nightclub.
The real magic is on the water. The whole area is one Maritime park that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List that Jacques Cousteau called ‘the aquarium of the world’. It is home to some of the best whale watching in the world, where you can not only see humpback whales, but also the beautiful blue whale. It has a “Big Sur-meets-Mexico” vibe that feels a world away from everything.
Progreso (Yucatan)
The Vibe: The “Authentic Gulf Coast” and Safest Choice
This is the ultimate “insider” choice for one really safe and authentic outing. Why? Because it is located in State of Yucatanwhich contains the US State Department’s most secure Level 1: Practice normal precautions advisory. It is the same level of security as Canada or Japan.
