Autumn holidays-two words that evoke images of fresh air, lively foliage or a final attempt to take some sun. But let’s really be: the gap between the journey you see on Instagram and the reality on the floor can be huge, especially in the fall.
As the experienced team of editors and writers here JourneyWe have seen it all. We know the disappointment of arriving at a ‘dream’ destination to discover that the peak colors have already passed, the weather is miserable or the ‘shoulder season’ is just as busy as the summer. This is not about avoiding these beautiful places forever; The point is to avoid them if they probably disappoint.

Thus, based on our collective knowledge and current traveling, here are 7 destinations for which we are careful this fall. We have also recorded a smart alternative to each, because the goal is to travel smarter, not more difficult.
1. New England (Vermont, New Hampshire)
The problem: the fall “You missed it”

Those classic, fiery Red New England landscapes? They come with a notoriously short and fickle expiration date. Travelers are planning a trip for half to late October in the expectation of peakvladling, but the reality is that in many of the most famous areas the lively colors have already come and gone, leaving the gray and bare “stick season” behind. You pay the highest prices of the year for a trip with a big chance of disappointment if your timing is not perfect until the day.
Instead, consider the Blue Ridge Parkway, VA/NC. Because it extends hundreds of kilometers with different heights, the foliage season here is much longer and forgiving, giving you a much better chance to catch the peak colors without the nail biting gamble.
2. Rome & Florence, Italy
The problem: the “shoulder season that is not”

For years, the Savvy Traveler’s Mantra was in the fall to visit the iconic cities of Italy to avoid the summer crowd. The problem? Everyone caught. The reality in 2025 is that October is the new August. These cities are still packaged, the lines for the Colosseum and Uffizi Gallery are still incredibly long and the hotel prices have not fallen considerably. It does not provide the relaxed, romantic experience that you hope for.
Instead, consider: Bologna, Italy. This is the undisputed foodie capital of Italy and autumn is the absolute best time to visit for the harvest season of truffles and Porcini mushrooms. It offers a beautiful medieval architecture and a lively, authentic atmosphere with a fraction of the tourists.
3. The Greek Islands (Crete, Rhodes)
The problem: the “End of the Blues season”

Although it is not a complete ghost city as in the deep winter, the larger Greek islands can be a disappointment at the end of October and November. The lively energy of the summer has disappeared and the weather becomes a gamble, with a much greater chance of cool, windy and rainy days. A lot of water and shops start to close for the season, and you may think that you will get dreams of a sun -drenched beach journey a cold reality.
Instead, consider the Algarve, Portugal. As one of the sunniest regions in Europe, the southern coast of Portugal still offers beautiful, mild and sunny days far into the fall, with dramatic landscape of the cliff and prices that are a fraction of their summer peak.
4. The Philippines
The problem: the “Typhoon gamble”

This is a critical pitfall “Do your research”. Our fall is exactly in the middle of the typhonic season for the Philippines, one of the most active storm areas in the world. Planning a journey to see the beautiful, world -famous beaches of Palawan or Boracay In this time is a gamble with a high bet, with a considerable risk of flight cancellations and days of heavy rain that can derail an entire vacation.
Instead, consider: North Thailand (Chiang Mai). November marks the start of the cool, dry and absolutely perfect season here. The landscape is incredibly lush after the rainy season and you will experience magical events such as the Yi Peng and Loi Krathong Lantern festivals.
5. The Canadian Rockies (Banff, Jasper)
The problem: the “winter came early” fall

Travelers see photos of the iconic turquoise lakes and think they can get that image in October. The reality is that the region often gets its first large snowfall by mid -October. The famous lakes freeze, the golden larch season is complete and many picturesque discs such as the Icefields Parkway can become dangerous or temporarily close. It is often a full winter, not the fresh autumn tour that you had planned.
Instead, consider the National Parks of Utah (Zion, Bryce Canyon). October is the absolute Prime season here. The brutal summer heat has disappeared, the crowd becomes thinner and the Cottonwood trees in the canyons change a brilliant golden yellow against the red rock, which ensures a spectacular and reliable autumn adventure.
6. Dubai, VAE
The problem: the “still an oven” fall

While technically speaking, September and October in Dubai are still suppressive and humid, with temperatures that often rise well into the 90s. It is not yet the pleasant “winter season” that makes the city a pleasure to explore outdoors. You pay high prices to stay in the air conditioning indoors, which beats the purpose of an outing.
Instead, consider: Muscat, Oman. The weather here is also starting to be beautiful in October, but it offers a more authentic and demonstrably more picturesque Arabic experience. You can explore dramatic fjords, beautiful wadis (river valleys) and a beautiful, historic city with much less crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere than Dubai.
7. Munich, Germany (during the Oktoberfest)
The problem: the “Festival -Overload” Val

Unless your only goal is to go to the OktoberfestVisit Munich during the festival (late September to the beginning of October) is a logistical and financial nightmare. Shooting hotel prices to absurd levels (often 4-5 times the normal rate), the city is packed to the gills and every other attraction is busy. It is a poor value proposition for a general autumn trip to Germany.
Instead, consider: Prague, the Czech Republic. It offers a stunningly beautiful autumn experience with beautiful colors, fairy -tale architecture, a beer culture of world class (and famous cheap!) And prices that are a fraction of what you would pay during the festival in Munich.
