Alabama Natural Bridge, Haleyville

Natural Bridge in Winston County is another hidden natural wonder of Alabama. It is 44 meters long and reaches 18 meters high, making it the largest natural bridge east of the Rockies.

To get there, you have to follow a path of more than two kilometers. But don’t worry, the terrain is not difficult. After you return, you can buy souvenirs at a small gift shop and refuel at a picnic area. The site is open all year round and there is a small entrance fee, so be prepared, you may need cash.

Rattlesnake Hall, Tuscumbia

Are you a fan of western films? In that case, you just have to visit the Rattlesnake Saloon in northwest Alabama. This unique restaurant has an old-fashioned salon design, fantastic dishes, horseback riding and live music.

However, it is not just the western theme that makes this place so special. It is nestled in a natural cave, which will take your dining experience to a whole other level.

Tinglewood Engravings, Montevallo

With its Tinglewood Carvings, Orr Park is yet another nature reserve that has been kept secret for years. And now you have the chance to discover it. But why Orr in particular? The story goes like this: in 1993, some trees in the park were destroyed by a storm. But instead of taking them away, Mr. Tingle carved them into different fairytale creatures and let the trees live forever.

If you want to make the most of your visit, try to arrive on September 7, when the famous city is visited Tinglewood Festival. You can look forward to a small competition, a car show, a tractor show and lots of delicious food.

Ave Maria Grotto, Cullman

If you like art and history, check it out Ave Maria Cave on your travel bucket list. Located in the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, this 10-acre park features 125 miniature replicas of religious structures from around the world, such as Montserrat, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome or the Tower of Pisa.

Besides being beautiful, it is also a shrine of great symbolism. It was all created by Benedictine monk, Brother Joseph Zoettl, and shows what years of faith, craftsmanship and dedication can lead to. So take some time to reflect and enjoy the meditative atmosphere. Who knows what else you will encounter here.

Dismals Canyon

Beautiful canyons can also be found outside of Arizona, and one of them is in Alabama. It is home to an array of geological formations, such as sandstone cliffs, natural bridges and waterfalls. On the other hand, the lush vegetation provides the perfect conditions for various plant and animal species, some of which are even endangered.

If you can, stay overnight, like Dismals Canyon is home to bioluminescent worms called “glowworms”.. They require a specific habitat and only live in a few parts of the world. Take a guided night tour to learn more about these fascinating creatures and see them up close. There are cabins for rent.

Neversink Pit, Fackler

Never sink is a breathtaking 160-foot outdoor pit in Jackson County. You can admire it from the edges, while experienced climbers can take their equipment and descend to the bottom.

The walk to the well is short but quite strenuous – not recommended for children. However, it won’t take more than 40 minutes and you can be pretty sure there won’t be anyone else around – perfect for disconnecting and enjoying the solitude of nature.

Please note that a permit is necessary but can be required online here. In addition, there is very poor telephone coverage. For your safety, we recommend that you go with someone.

Bamahenge, Elberta

South Alabama isn’t just about the sunny coast and beaches. Not far from Josephine you will find something you probably wouldn’t expect in such an environment: an American Stonehenge.

The replica of the English Stonehenge was made by artist Mark Cline and offers much more than “just” a circle of megaliths. There are also huge fiberglass dinosaurs and other quirky sculptures that transform Bamahenge into an unconventional art installation.
