According to meteorological observations, the 2024 hurricane season is expected to be one of the worst in the past two decades.
In a “normal” year the season produces 14.4 named storms, but this year 23 are expected. Likewise, 7.2 hurricanes are produced, but we will see no less than 11.
According to experts at the University of Colorado, five of these eleven hurricanes are expected to fall into categories 3-4-5.
Two weeks ago, the U.S. State Department issued a warning to seven Caribbean countries, instructing Americans what to do in the event of a hurricane landfall.
These countries include Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia.
Fortunately, this doesn’t mean your Caribbean vacation is completely ruined.
According to data from the FOX Forecast Center 7 Caribbean Islands have been the most safe of hurricanes in the past 170 years.
Aruba, BonaireAnd Curacao have not experienced a major landfall in more than 130 years.
The last time Trinidad and Tobago in 1933 was hit by the direct effects of a hurricane. Although the islands were lightly hit by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
There is more. There are two islands with seven sea colors called San Andrés And Providencia which have only had two hurricanes since we have had records. These areas are close to the Nicaraguan coast, but belong to Colombia.
Things can happen and any of these islands could end up being in the path of a hurricane. But that’s not the rule.
“Of course, every island in the Caribbean can see hurricanes. However, [these islands] lie south of what we call the ‘hurricane belt’, [so they] are not susceptible to tropical disturbances, hurricanes or tropical systems,” said FOX Weather Meteorologist Michael Estime.
Choosing where to spend your Caribbean vacation during hurricane season should not be taken lightly.
Travelers are unaware of the dangers and inconveniences and can have their vacation ruined by a lack of information and planning.
Such was the case with Z. Libertador, who complained about the weather conditions his family encountered a few years ago at the destination they had chosen.
We “went to Miami Beach for a vacation one October, at a hotel on the beach. There was a huge rainstorm over the entire southern half of Florida. It was rainy and cold for four days and three nights. We spent all that money to sit in the room and watch movies. We didn’t see the sun until we got in the taxi to go back to the airport. Very disappointing,” he responded on June 3.
