The current travel reality in 2026 is a minefield for American travelers. From massive delays at the TSA airport to brutal storms that disrupt air traffic, just getting to your destination is a challenge.

But while you’re distracted by flight delays, many countries are quietly changing their entry rules.

If you miss these updates, the airline will turn you away at the gate before you board your flight. So far this year, nine countries have made major changes to how Americans can enter. Some of these updates will save you money, while others add new hurdles to overcome before packing your bags.

These are the nine countries that have done so changed their entry rules for Americans in 2026.

The United Kingdom

9 countries have changed entry requirements for Americans by 2026

Britain has officially rolled out its new electronic travel authorization (ETA). From As of February 25, 2026, this will be strictly mandatory for all US citizens.

You can no longer simply show up at Heathrow with your American passport. You must apply for the ETA online before you travel. If you have not linked this digital approval to your passport, the airline will legally deny you entry.

India

If you’re flying to India, paper arrival forms are officially dead. On top of the mandatory visa for Americans, a new requirement has been added.

From April 1, 2026, India makes its e-Arrival Card mandatory for all visitors. You must complete this digital form online within 72 hours before your flight lands. Don’t wait until you’re in the air as you’ll need an active internet connection to get it done.
