Mexico remains America’s most popular overseas destination, especially during the winter months.
But if you’re tired of the crowds on the beaches of Cancun, or the culture vultures flocking to Mexico City, why not try Tampico?
From March 6, 2025, US airlines launches a brand new direct flight to Tampico International Airport.
This new route flies non-stop from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
With the addition of this new flight, American Airlines is the largest U.S. airline operating in Mexico.
Fly non-stop to Tampico, Mexico
What makes this route so important is that it is the first non-stop route between the US and Tampicothus opening the city to the American market.
Bookings opened on September 16, so I looked at prices to see how much this new route would cost.
A basic economy return flight in the main cabin for one passenger currently costs $620. This is based on a flight on March 24 and a return on March 30.
The outbound flight time for this route is 2 hours and 7 minutes, while the return flight time is 2 hours and 6 minutes.
This is an attractively short flight time, making this an excellent choice for a short break or long weekend.
It’s worth noting that a basic economy ticket on American Airlines does not include seat selection or checked bags.
If you want any of these benefits, your ticket price will be higher, or it may be worth upgrading to a main or main plus ticket class.
Why visit Tampico
If you’ve never heard of Tampico, you might be wondering what the city has to offer.
Tampico is a lush and tropical port city that offers both beautiful beaches and at the same time a vibrant city atmosphere.
Let’s talk about the beach first!
You can’t really talk about Mexico without mentioning its beautiful sandy beaches, and Tampico boasts some of the best in the business.
Miramar Beach is the most famous tourist attraction in Tampico and is located on the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and features a large expanse of golden sand and a beautiful dock.
It is a beautiful and charming place to relax and unwind.
If you’re looking for something a little more exciting, Tampico is also a great place to enjoy water sports. Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and even jet skis can all be rented from spots along the waterfront.
If you are more interested in ecotourism, the Laguna del Carpintero is just 15 minutes from the city center and is a popular place for encounters with animals, flora and fauna.
This is the perfect place if you want to see turtles, iguanas and even a crocodile.
The best way to explore Laguna del Carpintero is by boat trip. Fun fact: every year the International Powerboat Competition takes place on this lagoon.
Cultural explorations in Tampico
Off the beach, those interested in Mexico’s rich history should visit the Plaza de la Libertad.
This is a historic square with grand historic buildings and old houses that give an insight into a Tampico of years gone by.
Nearby is Tampico Cathedral, which has a traditional Italian design and is a relatively modern cathedral that was only built in 1841.
It is an opulent cathedral with 3 naves and a marble altar that is definitely worth exploring. Entrance to the cathedral is free and free and is open every day from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM.
For history buffs, a visit to the city is a must. Not only is it one of the most architecturally stunning buildings in the city, but it also contains a small museum.
Here you can learn more about the city and the struggle for Mexican independence.
The experience includes a fascinating film about the role Tampico soldiers played in this battle.
Access to this building is also freealthough tips for your guides are welcome.
