Beautiful white sandy beaches, luxurious resorts and easy access.
I don’t need to build up tension here because unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know what I’m talking about Cancun-officially America’s Favorite Vacation Destination!
Cancun is so popular that 725 Americans arrive at the city’s airport every hour. This officially makes Cancun the most visited destination in Mexico for foreign tourists.
Although high season in Cancun is quickly approaching, it is still incredibly affordable to get there.
Combine these affordable flights with Cancun’s iconic beaches and it’s easy to see why the beach town draws a crowd.
Fly to Cancun for less than $175
The US is very well connected to Cancun. You can even fly non-stop to Cancun from 34 US states and more than 40 US airports.
This shows how high the demand for flights to Cancun is. But it’s also good news for budget travelers. Because if there are several airlines competing for your customer needs, this helps make prices more competitive!
Skyscanner currently offers nonstop roundtrip flights to Cancun for under $175 in November, December and January.
I put on my budget traveler hat and pulled out a few examples of the most affordable flights to Cancun for travel this winter.
Flying from Denver to Cancun on December 2nd and back on December 7th costs $174. This is based on a Frontier Airlines flight. To fly on United Airlines on the same day would cost $385 and American Airlines would cost $355.
This flight has an outbound flight time of 4 hours and 11 minutes and a return flight time of 4 hours and 28 minutes.
For a post-Christmas adventure, the cheapest airports to fly to Cancun in January are Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
Flying from Chicago to Cancun on January 13th and back on January 17th would cost $175. This price is based on non-stop roundtrip flights on American Airlines.
This flight has an outbound flight time of 3 hours and 55 minutes and a return flight time of 4 hours and 5 minutes.
It’s worth noting that all of these examples are based on the cheapest cabin and ticket category. This means that if you want to choose your seat or take hold luggage with you, you will have to pay a little more.
Why is Cancun so popular with American travelers?
The ease and convenience of reaching Cancun is just one of the reasons for the destination’s popularity.
Cancun is also known for its epic white sand beaches and breathtaking turquoise blue water.
Some of the best beaches in Cancun are Playa Delfines and Playa Tortugas. Both are renowned for the quality of their sand and are great places to relax and enjoy the exceptional natural beauty.
If surfing is your idea of a good time, try Playa Chac Mool in the heart of the Hotel Zone. 360 Surf School is located here and offers surfing lessons with prices starting at $75. This is considered one of the best surf schools in the area.
And if you want to go a little off the beaten track, try Playa Langosta. This is a beach popular with locals and is located north of the hotel zone. The shallow water makes it a great place for swimming.
Another aspect that makes Cancun so popular with American travelers is that it doesn’t push you too far out of your comfort zone.
By this I mean that you will find a warm American-style welcome in most resort hotels. The food is usually familiar and of a very high standard.
There is a different Cancun for every type of traveler. You can stay at your resort and enjoy spa treatments, relax on the beach or venture out and explore the rich history and culture of the region.
Because Cancun has been attracting and appealing to American tourists for so long, it’s a well-oiled machine when it comes to knowing what to do to keep them happy!
And with peak season approaching and expected to be busier than ever, we can say it’s clearly working!
