The good news about this coastal surprise is that you can enjoy both the delightful small-town aspects of autumn with a PSL in hand and then head to practically unknown islands to the masses, fraught with vibrant blue waters and pleasantly mild weather until the frigid winter temperatures arrive.
Welcome to Morehead City
Netflix’s hit show Outdoor benches has lifted the North Carolina coast to center stage in recent years.
Usually it’s the other ‘Carolina’ that draws a crowd for its spectacular coastlines, but don’t sleep on NC.


It’s not just the Real Outdoor benches that are worth a beach outing, but also underrated with Wilmington. Morehead City, the largest city in the region, offers those willing to give this little-known city a fair shake endless delights, ranging from a charismatic downtown to beautiful, crowd-free islands that slide through the cracks of guides.
A village-like charm teeming with freshly caught seafood like southern living The benches grillwelcoming locals, affordable lodging, and countless ways to enjoy the surrounding waterways, whether it’s kayaking, serene wetlands, or boarding a ferry to paradise, fall is a great time to visit for its open barstools and virtually flawless beaches.


Although the biggest surprise attraction will take you back more than a century of important American history.
Fort Macon is one of the most picturesque places in the area, with views of Blue Atlantic Waters and guests guided insights as a Civil War stronghold, a major reason why this state park has a near-perfect Google rating.

Sugar Loaf Island is another gem worth exploring, and the closest to downtown Morehead City. Although it is best reached on your terms via kayak or boat.
Here you will find more serenity in the calm waters of the Bogue sound.


Shackleford Banks is perhaps the most unique of the bunch, as its main inhabitants are wild horses, and near the northeast is Harker Island, popular for fishing and home Cape Lookout Bed & Breakfasta great place to disconnect and recharge.
Hop aboard one ferry from nearby Beaufort.
Although not a secret, Atlantic Beach Rounds out the best place to be for classic seaside fun – expansive beaches, oceanfront bars and endless ways to soak up the sun, even in the fall, like surfing or renting a beach cruiser.

There’s no better place to end Epic Beach days or island hopping than downtown Morehead City, where the vibrant marina boasts even more vibrant sunsets.
Easy to navigate and packed with pastel, coastal character, downtown Mom N’ Pop eateries, boutique shops and countless antique stores will fill countless hours on your trip.
But seafood is king here, as you can imagine. Southern Living also recommends Red fish grillwhich happens to be Morehead City Restaurant’s number one lake at Tripadvisor.
There’s no shortage of cozy inns and old-fashioned lodges also dotting the region, but those who aren’t fans of typical chains should opt for the KasktoeL, a comfortable mid-sized tower overlooking the scenic waterfront.
