Nothing is more frustrating than pest problems. In the fall, when your family begins to seek shelter from the cold air by staying indoors, neighborhood pests can do the same. Autumn pests can lead to many long- and short-term problems in the home, so it is crucial that you take control of rodent and insect management before a problem arises.

1. Seal entry points to keep insects out

One of the easiest ways for fall pests to enter is if an area is not properly sealed. Instead of protecting your home, provide an easily accessible doorway. Attempt adding effective door movements covering all open spaces in a doorway.

Once you have finished setting up the door movement, scan the area for any light gaps. Any glare could indicate that you are welcoming unwanted guests. Adding foam or spackle to cracks is another useful way to seal spaces. However, keep in mind to smooth out bumpy surfaces that intruders can gnaw on.

2. Maintenance of outdoor areas

Locking up your home is a good way to keep small intruders out, but it’s also helpful to take steps to prevent them from coming to your door.

Unfortunately, many infections arise from excessive waste accumulation, so remove rubbish and fallen plants from your property as both can attract creatures. Even the smallest crumbs can be read as an “open” sign for unwanted residents.

3. Store food and supplements properly

To avoid attracting fall pests, remove the treats from the counter immediately rather than leaving them for a while. You need to think about the right ways to store your meals and snacks.

Limit the risks of infections invest in airtight containers or bagswhich can also prevent contamination of food. These prevent air from entering and perishable items from getting stale.

4. Clean counters and rotate groceries

Take proper cleaning initiatives to prevent small intruders from burrowing into your home by wiping down counters and dining tables to remove any crumbs from the surfaces. Write down the expiration dates on your food labels and make sure anything that is outdated or moldy is disposed of properly.

Spoiled edibles can increase the chance of pest problems and can even cause a pungent odor. If you store food in a cupboard or refrigerator, consider moving all older snacks and meals closer to the front to minimize the risk of moldy dishes being overlooked.

5. Use natural repellents and barriers

Rodents can chew or damage furniture or electronic wiring, so consider installing barriers or areas that can deter pests.

A good strategy is to use scents that appeal to people but keep pests and creepy crawlies at bay. Try to post pieces of peppermint or coffee grounds in the area, where everyday products can be found around the house.

Know when to call a professional

Sometimes a pest problem may require professional help, even if you use many home remedies. Some warning signs that a treatment plan is not working include: noticeable major damage to the house or if you follow all the right steps but are still experiencing a pest problem.
