The US Department of State has issued an updated travel advisory for the Maldivesurging US citizens to exercise greater caution due to possible terrorism threats in the island. The advice, increased to Level 2: Be extra carefulhighlights the risk of attacks that can occur with little or no warning in areas visited by tourists.

According to the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, terrorist groups and individuals can target locations such as resorts, beaches, markets, government buildings and transportation hubs. The advisory emphasizes that while the Maldives is known for its luxury tourism industry and isolated holiday islands, the possibility of attacks cannot be completely ruled out anywhere in the country.

Officials also noted that response options on remote islands may be limited, potentially delaying emergency services in the event of an incident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises travelers to remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations or large gatherings and monitor local media for updates. US citizens visiting the Maldives are also encouraged to register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security alerts and facilitate contact with the nearest U.S. embassy in the event of an emergency.

Additional guidance includes obtaining comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and assessing travel insurance Land Security Report available via the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
