Jamaica is on high alert as Hurricane Melissa, now a category five storm, barrels towards the island with winds of up to 170 miles per hour and warnings of catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surges are being issued. The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported Monday that Melissa was about 145 miles (233 kilometers) southwest of Kingston and slowly moving toward the island’s south coast. Authorities fear it could become the strongest hurricane to ever hit Jamaica. The government has declared the entire island a country “endangered” and ordered mandatory evacuations in vulnerable communities in Kingston and other coastal areas. Prime Minister Andreas Holness urged citizens to take the storm seriously and posted on X: “Every Jamaican must prepare, stay indoors during the storm and adhere to evacuation orders. We will weather this storm and rebuild stronger.”

Melissa has already left devastation in its wake, claiming four lives on the island of Hispaniola, three in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic, where heavy rains flooded neighborhoods and swept away homes. The slow-moving nature of the storm poses an additional danger, with the NHC warning that up to 40 inches of rain could fall in parts of Jamaica over the next four days. Across the island, schools, churches and community centers have been converted into emergency shelters, and buses are transporting residents from flood-prone areas to safer locations. As towering waves crash along Jamaica’s coastline and storm surges loom Tuesday night, forecasters warn that Melissa is likely a “extremely powerful major hurricane” as it moves over southeastern Cuba on Tuesday evening and the Bahamas on Wednesday.

Juventus have sacked head coach Igor Tudor after an alarming eight-match winless streak that left the club outside the Champions League places.
