Here in the Motherland we all know Frontier and Spirit, but the guys across the pond are more comfortable with saving money by rail to avoid the Ryanair sardines and the fees for practically breathing recycled air.

Americans may not know names like Lumo first hand, but if you’re planning a trip to Britain soon, this is one to keep in mind for a great adventure without breaking the bank.

It’s safe to say that you can explore great British and Scottish cities for less than a weekend away in London alone – have you seen their prices? Yes!

Lumo is a fully electric train company from England, specialized in low fares. Their latest route announcement caught the attention of our expert team here at Travel Off Path, so we just had to share it.

Lumo’s new route, launched in December, makes escaping the costs of London’s bank bleeding more attractive than ever as you can hop aboard a cheap train to discover hidden gems and Scotland’s most famous cities.

Exploring the Scottish countryside is something that will stay in your mind forever, but don’t get so mesmerized that you skip Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Although there really isn’t a wrong place to visit, Scottish cityscapes are somehow both nightmarish and dreamy in one, with eerie gothic architecture looming overhead.

It is truly a pleasure to wander through both cities, even if you are not a history buff or a subscriber Architectural summary.

Everyone will appreciate the timeless facades and towering cathedrals seemingly plucked from the eras of the Old World, especially those of Edinburgh Victoria Street and Glasgow Buchanan Street.

Lumo’s new route is a game-changer as flying from London or opting for another train can often be pricey, so this will reshape the way travelers build multi-city itineraries in the future.

From London it is estimated to take around four and a half hours to Edinburgh, and another hour or so to Glasgow.

Britain puts a stop to what most travelers never see

Besides London and Scotland’s most sought-after cities, much of Britain is still considered off-road for many American tourists.

Lumo’s latest adventure should change that.

Not only can you visit three of Britain’s most beautiful cities, but you can also go home with bragging rights and photos of places they may have never heard of.

Your first stop is Newcastle, but if you really want to sound like a real boy, that’s the official name Newcastle upon Tyne — a perfect subject to stick out your little finger while drinking tea.

This lively riverside city is best known for football (yes, the Real name for the sport 😉), but don’t sleep on the postcard bridges, the incredible food and beer scene and the undeniable authenticity compared to the hordes of tourists in London.

It is of course also much cheaper.

The other, lesser known stop on this route is also in Scotland. The city of Falkirklocated between Edinburgh and Glasgow, is one of Britain’s biggest surprises.

Known for modern architectural wonders such as unmissable horse head statues known as The Kelpiesas well as the Falkirk Wheel, if you want to immerse yourself in everyday Scottish life without the crowds, this is the place!

Ticket prices & Facilities on board

Lumo lives up to its ‘cheap’ reputation no matter how you divide this route.

Should you board in London and enjoy the full journey to Glasgow, it will only cost you $44 on the low end.

Say you spend some time in Newcastle and book the rest of the trip from there, those fares start at just $15.

Of course, prices vary for different reasons, but we have confirmed that these prices exist for the lowest class.

Unlike budget airlines in the United States, you aren’t crammed in like a Frontier flight.

Here’s a quick overview of what to expect on board a Lumo train:

  • Ergonomic chairs
  • Sockets
  • Reading lamps,
  • Extendable tray tables
  • Clothes hangers
  • Free basic WiFi (LumoGo)

  • Edinburgh – Waverley
  • Falkirk — Falkirk High

If you’re traveling through Britain in late spring or summer, keep an eye on Lumo’s Can launch from another London-Scotland route to little-known Sterling, full of a worn cityscape and beautiful castles.
